i think this would be a good way to tie shepard into the story.

The story would be A few hundred years after the events of mass effect 3. The galaxy is under threat from the leviathans(the first apex species), who have harnessed the mysterious powers of dark matter, and all its secrets. Now the council ( which could include maybe a new species that has emerged like the humans did), needs  someone to go investigate the "dark matter" and fight the leviathans. You wind up being the only one the council can convince to do the mission.( I wont get into the background of the character but a criminal who is seeking redemption or immunity from his crimes would be sweet). Fast foward  through several missions and you find an audio log from the nordmandy, where commander shepard was talking about an investigation of "dark matter".  You find out that the normandy  took a trip into the neighboring galaxy sometime between the events of mass effect 1-3. That is all the audio gives you and now you have to figure out what to do. Fast foward again and you meet a rogue salarian scientist that says he can bring back commander shepard from the dead.( Seeming the events are several hundred years later from mass effect 3, if your commander shepard lived, he would have died of natural causes by now. If you died in your ending then it works out perfect too.) Also  by now, technology should be advanced enough to do this. Soon shepard is back alive, but he remembers nothing of his past life or the mission regarding dark matter. You convince him to join your team, and as the game progresses his memory comes back to him. This would set up flashback missions you could do as commander shepard and the squadmates we all grew to love.  These missions would obviously happen as time progress, and give us all a chance to play as a our favorite hero again. Also these missions would be scarce so you would have plenty enough time to play as the new main character, growing to love him. You slowly piece together commander shepards memory and the new things you find in order to unlock the secrets of dark matter and stop the leviathons.

This would allow for people to play as shepard again and have him as  a squadmate at other times. It sets up for a new character and a new triology, while still retaining some of the old mass effect. The game would take place in a new galaxy along with the one from the triology.(meaning a set of new races) It would also allowpotentially for some old companions to return.  Also they could end commander shepard's legacy the way they should have this time around, and set up the new legacy of a new charcter at the same time.

 I would love it if it was a prequel. Nothing related with saving the galaxy or the reapers in general. Maybe something like a personal vendetta against a certain individual(s). I have this cool idea that the main protagonist is an outstanding c-sec officer turned spectre whose background you can customize as you could Shepards. But we coud also choose the main protagonists race. Human, turian, asari or salarian. An depending on the protagonists race, different choices can be made, including in the background options. Ex: If you choose asari, a background option could be that the protagonist was a former asari commando etc.
