This will go wildy off topic, but what is replayablility then?
Can a game like say, Super Mario Bros. contain replayability in its design vs a game like Command and Conquer?
I'd agree with Sylvius' definition of replayability, although not necessarily his assertion that replayability is evidence of player freedom - that's just one of many explanations.
However, I do agree that the more sandbox-like a game is, or the more the game specifically rewards variation in approach, or embeds it into the design (be that in terms of content, gameplay or outcome), the more likely it is to have replayability to me personally.
But quality of gameplay experience, strength of narrative story, level of immersion, influence of random factors and pure gold-plated nostalgia are all influencing factors for me. I've replayed as many games (and re-read books, re-watched films, etc.) that didn't design in replayability as those that did.
But I would say that, with a couple of exceptional cases aside, I've generally far preferred games that did design in replayability.
