Just got dragon age origins w/ all DLC. Just got in 5 hours and was excited with getting Morrigan. I'm a level 6 mage and my goals are to spec into blood mage and arcane warrior. I just have some questions on several things:

How can I unlock all the mage specializations?
Is there some kind of score on evil or bad/renegade or paragon like mass effect?
What's arcane warrior like? And is battle mage better?
Where should I put my points in for the desired spec?

All my questions don't need to be answered. But anything that could help would be very much appreciative. Posted Image

Specializations are things you can get by usually having other people teach them to you via various methods. Once you unlock a spec once, it will permanently be available for all your characters.

I believe you automatically get Arcane Warrior and Spirit Healer.
Shapeshifter is taught by Morrigan if her approval is high enough
Blood Mage is taught by --Spoiler-- the demon inside Connor. Pretty much, you need to do Jowan's deal and enter Connor, and negotiate with the desire demon. She will teach you Blood magic if you agree to let her stay inside Connor. Connor will be back to normal, but he'll go crazy again in the epilogue. if you don't want it, then just get the spec, then reload to a previous save and kill the desire demon.

Arcane Warrior is a fun way to play mages. Mixed with Blood Magic you'll pretty much be the most aggressive mage possible. No passive healing for you!

Each spec has 4 total skills. I usually put the points in whenever they become available.

Arcane Warrior you find in the Elven Ruins.
Spirit Healer I can't remember, but I think I bought that spec in Denerim(?).

Arcane Warrior allows you to wear massive armor. It works by keeping a bunch of defensive sustainable abilities active while you use melee with the occasional spell to take down enemies. Arcane Warriors make excellent tanks and devastating melee dps when used properly. Combined with Blood Mage it becomes even more dangerous. Your sustainables may drain your mana pool, but Blood Magic allows you to cast from your health instead. A mage with both specs becomes a nigh-invulnerable powerhouse with access to a considerable number of spells before running out of fuel. Battlemage, when you get it in Awakening, is a nice third choice to round our your style, giving you another sustainable and AoE attack.

Regarding paragon/renegade: there isn't a score. Your choices will have long-term consequences for all affected parties and they alter which companions you have and who your allies are in the final battle. They can also allow you to make certain fights easier or avoid them entirely. The closest thing to "score-keeping" is your companions' approval. If Alistair, Wynne, or Leliana approves you are probably making a "moral" choice. If Morrigan approves you're probably doing something immoral.

*Regarding the unlocking of Blood Magic (which forces you to do something most players consider evil): once you unlock a spec, it's unlocked for every character on your account from then on. Meaning you only need to unlock everything once in your first playthrough, after that it's not necessary to go through the whole song and dance again. You can use this loophole to save before making your choice at Redcliffe, going through and making a deal to unlock the Blood Mage spec, and then reloading to the previous safe and making a more morally upstanding choice.

The manual for Spirit Healer would be available for sale in the Wonders of Thedas shop in Denerim. The other specializations can be unlocked as already mentioned.

I'd suggest you put most of your attribute points into Magic. You can also put a few points into Constitution but that is not necessary, given the facts that you get certain amount of HP with each level up, attribute bonuses from quests, equipments, and blood magic cost reducing gear. Being a mage, you also get next to a complete heal from a Lesser Health Poultice, and the Blood Magic sustainable having only a 10 second cooldown, turning it off temporarily for drinking a poultice is never a bad idea. Not to mention that playing a maxed out arcane warrior is like playing in God mode; so your health bar will only take a major hit from casting spells through BM. The point is if you are comfortable with your survivability, consider not wasting points in Constitution or any other attribute for the matter of fact except Magic.

However, if you are thinking of using melee weapons, then you'd want to invest a few points in DEX. Otherwise, your attack rating would suffer.

As well as magic, willpower is a good place to put points as it increases your mana pool.

Would also like to point out that as you have the DLC for DA:O, you won't have to strike any deals with demons in order to unlock the specialization. You can even buy the manual from a tavern in a city called Amarathine.

True, but since the OP mentioned of his plan to roll a AW-BM, the mana pool becomes next to obsolete.

You might want to get Rock Armor from the Primal School. Also, Maric's Blade and Cailan's Shield Combo is good if you need more mana regen.
The chronological order for the DLCs would be - Awakening ->GoA->Witch Hunt.
