Did I miss something? Why are people such big fans of his? I don't want to bash him, I actually want to know why he's so riveting of a character? To me he's just a minor NPC in Dragon Age 1 and 2. Please I'd like to know. I've played DA1 and 2 several times. Have I missed something? Did he have a part in a DLC?

Some people like the character, some like the potential behind the character.

That's it really, no deeper answer necessary.

You'd probably be best to do one of two things if you're genuinely curious:

1) Check all the threads that were closed that have asked the same question

2) Ask in the Cullen thread in the DA2 forums.

I like him because he is the only character in the mage/templar conflict who acts slightly sensible

Why does anyone like anything?
I'm genuinely baffled as to why so many people can't seem to wrap their brain around the fact that some people like Cullen in particular.

Did you miss something? I don't know, how much did you talk to him?

He's an interesting if minor NPC in the Amell origin story. Some people like that he obviously had a crush on their mage. His story at Kinloch Hold during the treaty quests is compelling: he's one of the few Templars to survive Uldred's demon party and his whole spiel right before you enter the Harrowing Chamber is a total pathos dump. He gets a slide in the epilogue, too, though I don't know if that was officially retconned or not. Something about him having a mental break and killing a bunch of mages.

In DA2, he's just about the only templar you meet who walks the middle of the road. You've got guys like Ser Alrik and his "Tranquil Solution" on the one hand and Ser Thrask and his "my daughter is a secret mage" on the other. Cullen is bound to his duty and tows the Chantry line, but he's not a blind follower either. When Meredith goes off the Cliff of Crazy he doesn't jump off after her, he recognizes her error and helps your Hawke out.

Granted, you really have to pay attention and read between the lines a bit to catch this stuff but it's absolutely there if you want to look for it.

No idea. He just seems like a spineless psycho to me.

But some people liked Fenris and Anders, so people obviously like weird things.

And I'm fine with that.

I talked to him quite a bit. I am a completionist in any game I play. I talk to everyone no matter how boring they are. Your explanation is very detailed thank you. I genuinely wanted to know if I missed something crucial because he's a very popular guy on the DA forums.

Why do people like making threads like these when they could just go the Cullen Companion thread and ask there?

Well he's ok to me. I guess people like him because:
- He obviously had a crush on female mage (mage origin). I guess people think his "babble and running away" when confronted by her was adorable.
- In DA 2, he's one of the few sane people that got involved in that Templar / Mage conflict. He's reasonable, and didn't blindly follow rules and orders.

That's about it I think.

I felt like kicking Cullen in the balls when at the end of DA2 he argues against Meredith near the end when she wants to kill you and he says. "Oh we agreed to only arrest Hawke and his companions," Thanks for having my back there Cullen old boy,

Jack ass.

Oh look. It's this thread again.

People like Cullen (or any character) for an assortment of reasons. It really depends on the person.
