For me it's like this:

Did you ever play LA Noire? Detective Cole is some much like Cullen, he talks in these big grand terms about what it means to be a cop (Templar) and how he can't feel anything for the criminals or even the victims really because has to focus on pure justice... but when other cops fall short, when he himself falls short, you see it's all him trying to convince himself and his peers that he is the paragon of justice and that real perfect righteousness is possible... when he shows us that really we're all human and we have to see our own faults and those in others to truly be good to one another.

In the start of DAO Cullen is a good kid (maybe kid's the wrong word but I'm running with it, lol), unsure about the dangers of mages and conflicted because he sees the mages as people and kids just like him (he even may have fallen in love with the female mage Warden), he is not sure what he really believes. But after the torture he endures in the tower and him seeing that any mage can be possessed even if they don't want to be, even if they passed all the "tests" and can kill people who were their friends... well, he wants to crawl under the blanked of Templar dogma for protection, and hide away his uncertainty. And he still is that first person. He is still that kid who can't really reconcile what he wants to believe with what he knows in his heart to be true, that mages are people and you have to be open in spite of the danger. But he can't show people that. Hawke can bring it out, Hawke can reach him on a deep level and show him who he is really, a person who does believe what the Templar's are meant to be and can really be that and still be unsure and act with honor and not only protect people from mages but protect mages from people... even from other Templar.

Just why I seem to like him, I see the story telling potential.

Actually, I can see Alistair becoming someone like Cullen if he had ended up being a Templar.

Because he's the only somewhat major DAII non-player character not to die or go crazy? Beyond that I dunno.

That's it really, no deeper answer necessary.

Pretty much this. I don't understand how hard it is for people to not get this.

Cullen is adorbz and pretty much an exaggerated Alistair.
On one hand, he was righteous in DA2. On the other, I would have loved to see him make a surprise return in DA3 by doing the whole "I was an irrelevant character in a bad origin--Watch as I take over the hearts of Player Characters Everywhere in a later game!" thing. Thanks Merill for giving us this amazing character archtype that Bioware must explore more <3

I agree on that good he is what he is.

I haven't played the female mage origin yet so I haven't seen his, apparently, adorable side. Then again I've never found shy and awkward to be a turn on.
He was relatively sane in DA2 and his voice actor is decent and some people like his looks. Maybe that's it. :)
If he is a romanceable npc in DAI though I really hope he gets a sense of humour. He's too serious for my taste.

He had some of that boyish innocence thing going on. Alistair nailed it though.

If they write Cullen half as well as they wrote Alistair I'll be happy. Honestly, I love Alistair so much I'd probably even have sex with the person who wrote him.

Cause he's sort of evil, but also a bit charming. The women who are the type to fangirl over a character typically go for those sorts of characters.

By Templar standards, thats a pretty moderate viewpoint for him to have.

in DA:2? yes, but the circle in Ferelden had a far more balanced relationship between mage ant templar.

the templars only called for the right of annulment because they assumed everyone was dead or an abomination "it is too painful to hope for survivors.....and find nothing"  the templars there were as much protectors as jailors.

I like him because he is a compelling character. This is pretty much the sole reason I like any character I like. He doesn't have to be perfect. In fact, flaws add to the appeal, provided they are understandable ones.

In DA:O, his mind is literally violated and he responds exactly as one might be expected to respond under those circumstances, by lashing out against the entity he feels is responsible. I understand his emotions and his torment elicits my sympathy. I like him because his character was believable and done well.

In DA2, I like him for the same reason. He remembers the trauma of his past, but he is actively trying to move past it. He has responsibilities now that he did not have then - hundreds of templars look to him for guidance - so he tries really hard to be the leader he is expected to be. He seems to really believe in duty and responsibility, moral or symbolic, and he desperately wants to do what he believes is the right thing. The fact that this is not necessarily what my Hawke believes is the right thing is completely immaterial. It's the thought that counts. Even when he's wrong - *especially* when he's wrong - he behaves in completely understandable ways. I admire the talent that went into making him such a believable character. As a character, he is placed in a situation he often finds extremely uncomfortable. He has not forgotten his past, but he tries to adapt to his present situation. He wants to be a good templar. He seems to believe that his responsibility is to serve and protect, even if he gets it wrong sometimes. I don't blame him for either his ability to trust those in authority over him or for his inability to trust the group he believes was responsible for his former torment. It's logical behavior. I like the fact that he is willing to risk both his life and his reputation for what he believes to be right. My Hawkes, mostly mages, often find that inconvenient, but as a player, I applaud the realism.

As for why I'd like him to have a major role in DA3, he's an interesting character. He espouses an idealized view of what the templars should be - an image he sometimes has difficulty living up to, but this in itself is endearing - but he is not unaware of current events or political climate. He grown a lot since DA:O, but he still has room to grow more. I'd like to see it happen. In short, I care about the character and I want to see how it ends.

Ahhh I don't care if he shows up in DA:I as a quest giver or whatever, but I'll be disappointed if he's a major companion. I loved Alistair and Anders but I'd rather do without having another blond human dude in the party. Especially one we already know pretty well who's already had a satisyfing (and COMPLETE) character arc from DA:O to DA2.

Gosh, now I remember why everyone hates the Cullen fandom. You bear witness to one minor NPC for five seconds in the first game, your loins catch on fire and you invade every possible thread oppressing the innocent with half-naked pictures of Cullen.

The sheer oppression of the Cullen fandom and half-naked Cullen results in everyone going in heat, everyone--trapped by their primal urges--start fighting each other to claim dominance of Cullen, clothes fall off and by the end of it, the entire damn forum falls into an anarchically orgy of oppression.

Thank heavens the united forces of the BSN have lured the contaminated into the Cullen thread to keep them from infecting everyone else from their ruts and estrus cycles, the BioWare Social Network has to forever deny it's previous events lest the Cullen fandom hear us and emerge from their hellhole.

When that day comes, I pray our children are prepared.
