i'm paraphrasing, so sue me "they could be abominations, kill them, kill them all!"

Your "paraphrasing" neglects his torture at the hands of bloodmages and that he was very traumatized. And also neglects his character development in DA2.

Gosh, now I remember why everyone hates the Cullen fandom. You bear witness to one minor NPC for five seconds in the first game, your loins catch on fire and you invade every possible thread oppressing the innocent with half-naked pictures of Cullen.

The sheer oppression of the Cullen fandom and half-naked Cullen results in everyone going in heat, everyone--trapped by their primal urges--start fighting each other to claim dominance of Cullen, clothes fall off and by the end of it, the entire damn forum falls into an anarchically orgy of oppression.

Thank heavens the united forces of the BSN have lured the contaminated into the Cullen thread to keep them from infecting everyone else from their ruts and estrus cycles, the BioWare Social Network has to forever deny it's previous events lest the Cullen fandom hear us and emerge from their hellhole.

When that day comes, I pray our children are prepared.

A more interesting question would be, why did they bring him back in DA2, given the minor role in DA:O? I think there is yet a story to tell here.  Fact is, he was betrayed by both Mage and Templar alike. Where does that put him in a Mage-Templar conflict?

Urgh, I know! I don't even know who this Cullen guy is, or why he's so popular. I just see these fan girls squeeing all over the place and I'm like wtf!

Well, seeing as how every mage in Kirkwall is apparently an abomination. He's right.

I'd hurl Cullen into a meatgrinder if it meant I could get Cole. Or Tallis for that matter. Or Sigrun! Or if it meant I could get to kill Sebastian.

Because a chance at playing the naughty apprentice and hapless recruit is too good an opportunity to pass up ;)

Basically though for me, he started off as the nice templar, sympathetic to the mages to some extent. Obviously that all changed when he was subjected to possibly the worst a mage could do to him. But he could be forgiven for the way he turned out, I think I would go off my nut too if I was subjected to that. But then he was willing to defend you, while you defend the mages at the end. He's a good guy at heart devoted to his path. And he's hot! :)

I like him because he is a compelling character. This is pretty much the sole reason I like any character I like. He doesn't have to be perfect. In fact, flaws add to the appeal, provided they are understandable ones.

In DA:O, his mind is literally violated and he responds exactly as one might be expected to respond under those circumstances, by lashing out against the entity he feels is responsible. I understand his emotions and his torment elicits my sympathy. I like him because his character was believable and done well.

In DA2, I like him for the same reason. He remembers the trauma of his past, but he is actively trying to move past it. He has responsibilities now that he did not have then - hundreds of templars look to him for guidance - so he tries really hard to be the leader he is expected to be. He seems to really believe in duty and responsibility, moral or symbolic, and he desperately wants to do what he believes is the right thing. The fact that this is not necessarily what my Hawke believes is the right thing is completely immaterial. It's the thought that counts. Even when he's wrong - *especially* when he's wrong - he behaves in completely understandable ways. I admire the talent that went into making him such a believable character. As a character, he is placed in a situation he often finds extremely uncomfortable. He has not forgotten his past, but he tries to adapt to his present situation. He wants to be a good templar. He seems to believe that his responsibility is to serve and protect, even if he gets it wrong sometimes. I don't blame him for either his ability to trust those in authority over him or for his inability to trust the group he believes was responsible for his former torment. It's logical behavior. I like the fact that he is willing to risk both his life and his reputation for what he believes to be right. My Hawkes, mostly mages, often find that inconvenient, but as a player, I applaud the realism.

As for why I'd like him to have a major role in DA3, he's an interesting character. He espouses an idealized view of what the templars should be - an image he sometimes has difficulty living up to, but this in itself is endearing - but he is not unaware of current events or political climate. He grown a lot since DA:O, but he still has room to grow more. I'd like to see it happen. In short, I care about the character and I want to see how it ends.

^^ this. For a minor npc he is a complex and fascinating character that I want to know more about.

Yepper. People like him because he's cute. There isn't a deeper reason, just people overanalyzing things to justify their like for him (because, you know, he's cute).

Cullen's a great fighter and he has high mental toughness. If I remember correctly, he was the only templar in DAO who survived when the Circle Tower was attacked. He was trapped for days or possibly weeks with all those monsters and blood mages.

How he managed to survive and stay sane is beyond me. It's very impressive.

In DA2, Cullen was one of the most reasonable people in Kirkwall. And I loved the moments when he spared the mages, when he stood up against Meredith and when he sided with Hawke.

This guy has my full respect.

I think a lot of people don't realize is the fact he became a Knight-Captain in DA2 was because Meredith approved of his brutal methods? Not to mention Greagoir sent him away for being too unstable.

Yeah, great boyfriend material.

And lol, he only stood up to Meredith after a few hundred innocent people were murdered. If they hadn't encountered Hawke, he would have blithly carried on.

I wonder if it could have anything to do with his VA having voiced Anders in Awakening. And not in the "this VA does all these characters and you can't tell" way, they sound exactly the same. :P

Cullen in DAI is necessary to help us unveil one of the most kept secrets in Thedas... something we've been suspecting for a while now... that Templars may have legs. Below free representation of what might be hiding under the skirt, though it is yet unconfirmed ^_^

That's a glittery fairy princess of course.

Anyway I don't really understand why people like Cullen so much, as much as I don't understand how can they be fangirling over Anders and Fenris

Did I miss something? Why are people such big fans of his? I don't want to bash him, I actually want to know why he's so riveting of a character? To me he's just a minor NPC in Dragon Age 1 and 2. Please I'd like to know. I've played DA1 and 2 several times. Have I missed something? Did he have a part in a DLC?

they consider him a "puppy"
