Bioware wouldn't be able to restrain themselves from killing them off in a cutscene as we stand by looking on helplessly.

Player character children? I'd hope not, too much of a hassle.

Companion children? That'd be nice, the companion does all the parenting off-screen.

Imagine Varric being a parent. That would be glorious...

I must admit that would be epic. You could get a "Three Men and a Baby" vibe too. My "Three Men and a Baby" dream team would consist of Varric, Sten, and Oghren. What could possibly go wrong?

 I now have that image in my head!

Personally I wouldn't want the protagonist to have a child.  In the Fable series the Hero could have children but he/she was the most rubbish parent and rarely went home.

Well, I'd like it if each of the backgrounds was associated with at least one unique NPC (eg a child) who would continue to interact with you throughout the main game. Hearing their insights on your choices and progress in the main story could be enjoyable, especially considering how could respond to their words of wisdom.

So, if you are from the Circle of Mages, you could have your old teacher who retires and lives near you. Would you be appreciative towards them and admiring of their skill, or would you resent them, feeling that they had held you back all these years? If you are from the Templars, it could be your old rival who goes off on his or her own adventures and comes back with exaggerated tales of their victories (which could eventually be exposed as lies, with your character choosing either to be sympathetic to your old rival or you could simply ridicule them.)

Equally, and more pertinently to the OP, you could have an old friend or family member, such as a spouse or offspring. You could either be estranged from your spouse or devoted to them, just as you could be an absent parent or a great mother/father. Character development would be important here: you could start out as uncaring but learn to appreciate your family; on the other hand, you could be devoted to your family at first, but be dragged away from them physically and emotionally by the trials that the main story places on you, becoming ever more distant (even when you interact with them.)

More generally, I hope that the backgrounds are treated as a mini-questline that spans (more or less) the length of the game, with a couple of unique characters associated with each background. Having a family would be one of several ways to accomplish this (though I could see people getting annoyed if they feel like are being made to have a family just because they want the background that happens to be associated with it.)

You'd probably need a timeskip, ala DAII (it'd have to happen in both romances and non-romances -- can't just have nine months that just... stop so your protagonist/companion gets pregnant). You could make a companion that becomes unavailable, but for a protagonist they can't really sit it out; so we'd have pregnant Inquisitor runnin' 'bout, kickin' arse...

Since I'm not a real fan of the timeskips, it doesn't seem worth it. Also, have a child, and customisation is probably never going to be enough: I wanted two kids, I wanted to raise him as a snide wise-cracking boy, I wanted to insist on doing their haircuts myself with a bowl... etc.

Don't mind kids in an epilogue, as long as the protag. explicity states at one point "I want kids".

Headcanon accepted as my own until direct contradiction is made.

Actually, that'd be great. There could even be a line or two from the LI about how the inquisitor must look after herself, cause her blood's not just her own now. Same with the pregnant companion.

Of course, it still puts a wedge into the same-sex romances and makes them seem excluded. That's not something I enjoy on principle.

There were kids in Origins, but I don't recall seeing any children in DA2. So I don't think there will be children in DAI, for some reason.

There were kids in Darktown...only Darktown. Guess all the Kirkwall kids went to Boarding school or something. <_<

It was hinted during Exalted March development that Hawke would be adopting a kid. Whether that story element is going to be brought into DAI or not, well just keep an eye on David's twitter I guess.

Having kids only works as an after game thing. Like in epilogue slides.

I want to see a baby in the DA universe. But I don't want it to belong to me. We've seen kids, but never babies in-game. I want to see a fat, happy Qunari baby. Withdawiddlehornssssssssss. x3 daaaw

Only as an option. I definitely don't want my heroes to be forced into parenthood, since practically all of them believe their life style is not suited for raising children.

The world is falling down around everyone and the pc is thinking about having kids...maybe it can be mentioned in the epilogue if the story turns out well but something along the lines of skyrim uhh don't see that

yes because there is a war on and the whole world is falling apart "Its not a good time to bring kids into the world"

honestly screw that kind of thinking. if we all thought that way, it would be the last generation.... people started familys during WW2, while the bombs where dropping and things looked bleak. Its called Hope, that the world will get better, and its something to help push a person forward.

Something like in Red Dead Redemption. After the death of  the father, you play as the child.

Or they could do it Fire Emblem style. You and some of your companions get married, and then their kids start arriving from the future! with different looks depending on who you chose to be with.

I guess fans of gay relationships wouldn't care for it, but then again... that's just how it works. Let's not leave things out just because it doesn't apply to everyone.

There's no time travel in Dragon Age! And when I think of FEA's children, all I hear is "FAAAAAAAAATHER!"

OP, trust me. I tried to start this thread forever ago. You just end up getting a lot of negative feedback because fans completely over think the parenthood notion. I personally don't see why the PC can't be a parent whose child was taken away to the circle (it's a background story option) - hence you never see your child except maybe in a dream/vision via small cut scene.

But yeah...don't even try asking fans to think outside the box on this one...
