Honestly, if they got rid of gift-giving, I wouldn't miss it.

Heyyyy.. this just made me realize something. In DA2, does the LI ever give the PC anything? Like, Alistair gave a rose and Morrigan gave a ring(?). I never got anything from Fenris. Selfish Bastid.

No I preferred the DA2 system. DAO made it too easy. If you used the right gifts you could get almost max approval with each companion without talking to them at all. I preferred the DA2 system of only meaningful gifts for each companion.

I liked this better myself, however I didn't like that they basically hid the gifts in random piles of rubble.  I think ACQUIRING the gift ought to be a meaningful moment, not just GIVING it.  "Hey, this random thing I found by the docks in a pile of poo made me think of you!" is not much of a sentiment compared with "hey, the Viscount gave me this for saving the city but I think YOU should have it".

Yeah it was only like one or two gifts total to each companion and you had a conversation during it as well so how much friendship or rivalry you got varied.
