I remember a post detailing the system they were considering for DA:I, and it would be awesome if it was included, but I don't think companion customization is something that should be expected, even though it's a staple of party-based RPGs. After all, in DA2, you are playing Hawke, not Anders or Isabela or anyone else, so you aren't entitled to control what they wear.

That seems more like a philosophical distinction or an excuse than an answer or gamplay reason.  In Origins we played the Warden not the companions, but we could still control their equipment and skills/talents.  I prefer greater customization, especially when it comes to talents/abilities.

I'm well aware of what was in Origins, what's your point?

My point is that this excuse, "...you are playing Hawke, not Anders or Isabela or anyone else, so you aren't entitled to control what they wear."  is a cop out, especially when you can say the same thing for the previous game in the series (that you're playing the warden) but you can still control what equipment your companions use.   But hey, if we're not doing party customization anymore, can we at least limit the loot to things our character can actually use.  It's really annoying picking up armor that nobody in the game can use.

It's not an "excuse". Just because one game has a feature does not mean that its sequel must have that feature.

There are a lot of features that people expect and demand in RPGs that in fact have nothing whatsoever to do with roleplaying.

I do have to say I hope that if they keep the "loyalty"/personal quests idea in the games for companions that there is some sort of an armor/get up change afterwards that is kinda on par with what Mass Effect 2 had.

Only having them change what they wear based on whether they are an LI or not in DAII never made a ton of sense to me.

Yeah, it's kind of sad that I slept with Isabella just so changed her clothes :D

Strictly from a roleplaying aspect, I find it strange that the PC wouldn't share the loot and equipment upgrades they find with their companions.  Who are right there when you find it.  Especially if you yourself can't use it.

Rogue Hawke: "Let's see what's in this chest ... +20 Dragonscale Plate Armor? Vendor trash ... "
Fenris: :(
Rogue Hawke: "Hmmm... magical robes of evasion? Trash ... "
Anders: :(
Rogue Hawke: "Massive Shield of Protection? Trash ... "
Aveline: :(
Rogue Hawke: "Aha! A new Silver Ring. At least there was something of value in here."

I certainly hope so; one of the first things I do when playing DA2 is mod my saves so my companions are wearing different outfits. So annoying to have that taken away from us; player agency is a good thing!

It is an excuse.  Something like, 'we thought keeping a unique look for the companion characters was more important than controlling their inventory.' is an explanation (and I was under the impression that was the actual reason).  It makes a certain amount of sense even though I don't agree with it.  Saying that you don't get to pick the armor for your companions because Hawke is your character, not the companions, is an excuse, and a bad one at that.  If that was the case, why do we get to give them new weapons?  Why don't they stick with the generic ones?  Why do we get any choices in allocating their skils and talents? Maybe they should just auto-level.  They're not our characters afterall.

I did.  I liked her in Warden armour.

Frankly, having equipment rules differ between the PC and the other party members just isn't acceptable.

I liked the type of customization that they showed at the PAX east panel I think it was. Where you could equip a piece of armor and the look of that armor would be unique to whatever character you equipped it to. Good idea I think.

Has there been any word on whether http://blog.bioware....acustomization/ is still the plan? I really hope so, it sounds perfect to me.

There are trade offs as in all things when you do this. The more you customize outfits the more generic the character has to be. I would not want to be able to change their physical appearance at all.

I personally couldn´t care less about "unique appearance" as long as I can decide what my henchmen wear and use.

I don't think telling people what equipment to use in combat is out of line for a commander.

If they want to keep them in unique outfits then don't make it a party based game.

I want to dictate what my party wears, and if they have to keep their silly looking default outfit on for the sake of some cosplayers than I wont be happy.

Anyone else hope we can customize our companions appearance in this game?

Definitely. I didn't like the way it was done in DA2. I like being able to dress them up...

Or down. I want it like it was in KOTOR.  Am I the only one who made Canderous run around shirtless and in his underwear in that game?  :innocent:

they will allow different armor then just one set. also the facial stuff is too much since it takes away their individuality

Can and did.

Isabela's 'iconic' outfit completely clashed with the rest of the setting. Instead of being "Isabela the pirate from Thedas" she was "Isabela the super speshul companion who gets her own unique tailor made outfit"

I prefer characters to look like they're apart of the setting rather than super special iconic super heroes in a sea of 'boring' regular people.

Besides, she looked infinitely better in the Robes of the Notorious Pirate.
