Just making sure I've got this right after finally finishing the game - the discussion the Seeker has with Leliana seems to implicate that both heroes vanished? Or did I get that wrong somehow?
If that's true then I'm all the more excited for DA3!
Though... I would be lying if I didn't mention also dreading it a bit... as something tells me that our characters just got owned by the latest bad guy on the block, and best case scenario we get to put them out of their misery in DA3... :(
AKA another Revan waiting to happen...
What do you guys think they'll do with that?

Uncertain. Keep in mind there's basically three fates for the Warden: a) he's dead, B) he left through the mirror with Morrigan, or c) he's chillin' in Ferelden. So when Cassandra mentions the Warden is "gone", then she could be referring to a Warden who took Option A or Option B.

As for Hawke, it's possible that he got taken down by the latest bad guy on the block, which I suspect is actually a very bad lady that's been on the block for a while now (Flemeth).

Or, depending on how you finished DA2, maybe Hawke is just in hiding. Pro-Mage Hawke might have half of Thedas on his tail, after all, since you've potentially pissed off the templars, the Wardens, the Crows, the Orlesians …

Yeah, maybe I've read too much into it - Cassandra might have just used neutral phrasing to cover all of the above. :P
The Warden I loaded as saved game romanced Leliana, so he was definitely option #3, though not necessarily chilling in Ferelden due to being a Mage anyway.
I had the impression Leliana had been looking for the Warden, hence the team up with Cassandra.
Or she could've just joined the Chantry because she thought it was the right thing to do, and to have some of her old fun life back.

Option C: The Warden is chillin' in Ferelden or wherever.

Well, Leliana began working for the Divine as far back as Awakening, when she sends you that letter explaining why she can't join you at the Keep. Now she's working the job full-time, but I don't think it has anything to do with the disappearance of Option C Warden.

I have a feeling that if Option C Warden has indeed vanished, it has something to do with the end of Witch Hunt when Morrigan left you with something "of which you will find great interest." A tome explaining exactly what Flemeth is, maybe? And exactly why you should be hunting the crazy old bat to the ends of the earth?

I was curious about that too. At the end of Dragon Age II, Leliana tells Cassandra that the Warden has disappeared - in my first playthrough that made since because my Warden was off trying to make a second baby with Morrigan

But I would be confused if that was true with a male Warden who romanced Leliana and didn't chase after Morrigan. I know we get a letter where she's working for the Divine, but the game doesn't give any reason I know of so far why the Warden and Leliana remain separated over the years.

You seem to have forgotten that quite few years pass after the ending of DA:O, even when including The Witch Hunt. So in here comes option B2 and C2: Warden disappears. A option seems final though.

My bet is on Option C.

Considering that (and I'm pretty sure on this) Morrigan IS indeed going to be somehow a part of Inquisition, then my best bet would the Warden ended up trying to find Morrigan, and went into the Eluvian with her.

As far as Hawke goes, I would say Hawke disappeared because maybe he figured something out about the Eluvian as well (thanks to Merrill) and maybe had a similar fate of going into the mirror. (Not to say Hawke does not necessarily know anything about the Warden going into the Eluvian, that I wouldn't be quite sure of either way.)

Just my opinion.
