Dunvi is a classical musician? What instrument?

Violin (I have a modern violin and a baroque violin and a viola too, I'm best by far with the baroque one :P) and voice. I'm a much better singer than that now, too - that's 3 years old, and a live performance.

ETA: changed link to slightly less crappy aria

Aww I like violin. I finished elementary music school (6 years of piano), maybe I can play you something via teamspeak, since the piano is next to my computer :innocent:

:P blasphemy tiem but I am very picky about my piano music. I've always found pianos (especially the more modern they get, can you tell I'm a period performance nerd?) to be astoundingly clunky sounding despite their dynamic range.

That said, I really need to learn how to play piano myself :pinched: there's no good reason I can't other than lack of interest in practicing because I will never be good enough :crying:

What do you mean you're picky? I frustrated my teachers in the music school because I didn't want to play 90% of the compositions they wanted me to :D

Wow, that's very nice !
How do you find time to do all that ?

OT : what's the difference between a gaming headset and a studio headset ? I'm pretty happy with my old AKG K240 and I can't play without sound anymore.

Gaming headsets usually have mics attached :P

I've never shelled out for good headphones or even speakers because I have exposure to professional, industry quality headsets and speakers - the way I see it, mediocre stuff at the 100$ mark isn't worth it, I'll stick with 20$ stuff until I get the money and stability to own a several hundred or more $ custom setup.

*is a sound snob in so many ways*
*dont get me started on violin strings, btw*

And as for the music, while I am studying computer science I considered just going for a music degree, and if my school offered majors I would be getting a music minor. It's one of those things for me that I am just not allowed to not do, if you know what I mean? I feel almost restless if I'm not in at least 1 high bar choir.

Meh, I shelled way more than $100 by buying crappy headsets that broke in 2-3 months.

So I overall paid more for worse quality than now.

I didn't shell out $100 for mine but I like 'em.

They'd be great still if I didn't keep dropping them, but then again I'm not a sound snob

Since my headphones are cheap and have no mics they usually break when the cord snaps off somewhere, I can usually get several years of the them. Headsets (with mics) break a lot sooner I find, so until now I've been using webcam microphones instead.

Quality headsets make all the difference, imo. Mine are...okay, and certainly better than the headset they replaced. I'd purchase a nice gaming headset if I wasn't intent on finding a decent sound card first and I was inclined to talk in-game.

I see. I find separate mics to be getting in way of everything on my table though. Headphones are more practical for me.

Turtle Beach X12

This is exactly what I have... I love them. It did take me awhile to figure out how to get the mic set up, I could hear my voice right away but messed around with set up for a few hours before it would come through in game.

I know they haved saved me a few times when things are creeping up on me, dem brute toenails!

Turtle Beach customer service is real good to work with as well.

there's no reason to get a separate microphone unless you plan to actually record a lot with it

Sound cards are overrated. Don't even bother period unless you're setting up a full surround sound entertainment center what-have-you or dealing with professional quality recording/editing or extreme frequencies, and for most use cases the quality increase is going to be negligable unless you're also going to soundproof the room from outside noise. And if you are buying a card, there's basically no difference between a cheap one and an expensive one. A sound card should not be your impediment.

I did notice a quite a difference between a mb-integrated sound card and a separate one, when the mb sound card broke. But that motherboard was pretty old then :P

Admittedly, integrated sound cards can vary in quality a lot... but if you have a good motherboard then it probably has good sound, which is basically as good as a sound card if it has enough channels.

To an extent I agree. There is a point where the investment becomes pointless, especially if all that's going to be used is an inexpensive pair of headsets. However, a sound card does take some of the load off of the processor in an integrated system. That, more than anything else, is what I'm looking to achieve. So a decent card should get me where I want to go, and that doesn't necessarily mean an expensive sound card.

Oh haha ok that's what it means. I have a plantronics headset but I wear it around my neck and use it only for the microphone. I look very silly but I don't really care

Personally I really hear the difference between a $100 headset and a cheap one. Mine is really comfy too and as I wear it for long periods of time, it's important. The cable is super long and it never broke after years of loyal service.
How much is a professional headset like you're talking about ? I probably shouldn't go and try them out or I'll end up being unhappy with mine. Ignorance is bliss.

And I studied computer science too :)

I imagine proxy mines would have a very distinct sound if you used surround sound headphones. Hint hint. Turian soldier solo.

Actually, if your processor is less than 10 years old (aka has more than one core) then that's still not really a good reason IMO. The processing cost for sound is basically negligable in use cases that don't involve a better reason for a card... If your processor can't handle the extra load, you probably should consider getting a new CPU instead :P.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to get a sound card - if you need the extra ouput ports for a surround sound system, for professional quality editing and recording (isolation, reduces background noise), entertainment setups that involve multiple machines/outputs/inputs or high latency... but processor load is pretty near minimal.

But that said, a perfectly good card is like 30$, so I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, I'm mostly just saying don't let that stop you from getting a good quality sound system. I seriously look forwards too the day I have my own living space and money so I can pointlessly high amounts of money on a crazy sound setup, but at the moment since I have to stick the things into storage every summer and move every year it's just way not worth it.

That. I think the cheapest I've seen is $200? Though he wasn't even using that set, it was still in the box, wonder if there was a reason why :?. He does professional audio engineering (not a studio engineer but a freelancer specializing in classical recordings), and I don't know if he has different sets for, say, onsite, minimally edited (only a few takes) audition tapes, and when editing at home doing the really fine stuff for CD releases.

FTR that's why I'm skeptical about Beats - they are aiming for a really weird demographic, and basically their headphones are the best available that are marketed for casual consumers, but you can get real, professional quality headphones at the same price points, and they'll almost certainly be better.

I hope the X12s fixed everything that sucked about my X11s, especially feedback and hissing in the headphones and mic. Makes them unusable. I've been looking into a new headset too, but am wary of Turtle Beach bc of my experience.

I read really good reviews, actually, on that regard. Makes me wonder if you have a loose jack or something.

No, it was a common problem. Probably some bad batches. (Edit - and I would HOPE they fixed it with current model headsets!) I just wish we could get past analog connectors. There are USB headsets out there, but they have all sorts of compatibility problems with some games and driver issues. Digital audio for both mic and speakers is just so much better.
