I'm reasonably certain both men and women will be appearing in the next Dragon Age game.

But will they emerge from behind curtains, or be pulled out of hats?

They are what they are aren't they? Either men or woman.

Your point is? *genuine question*

*sigh*

It was a joke. I was suggesting that men and women would "appear" in the game in the same manner that things "appear" in a magic trick.

This is likely a bit of a tangent, but here's my thought: sexy men sell to other men either because (just like uber-hot models sell make-up and hair care products) men subconsciously believe the product will make them as attractive or because they find other men attractive.

To me, Kaidan's makeover caused <_< because he already had a very strong following of people who had gone on at length about how attractive he was in various ways.  It wasn't unil he was available as a romance option for male PCs that he turned into Lifty McBufferson, with features more chiseled to match.

Is that coincidental?  Perhaps.  But I can't help but wonder if they dialed up the manly-man factor to "balance" the bi or to make him more attractive to men.   Anders?  Similar, if not so obvious or (to me) overdone.

That said, there were rants accusing BioWare of creating Fenris as female fan service.  There were also smug responses of, "Good."  Women can objectify with the best of them, they just get the chance a lot less often in the video game arena.

Yeah. Both genders have been indoctrinated (I will never be able to use that word again without it evoking Reaper connotations) into accepting that the opposite gender finds this pre-packaged idea of beauty to be the only kind. It's probably much easier to sell your stuff if you make the consumer believe that they want this instead of telling them why they want it.

The media is satan.

I could have sworn that Fenris was actually written first for a male Hawke.

It's a little off-topic, but: For all the uproar over Aveline's "lack of looks," I actually thought she was quite the stunner - just as gorgeous as femHawke or Isabela. I don't understand why people draw her and try to soften her features, or say that's she's exaggeratedly masculine. I think she's very feminine.

I think people on the thread are right: character design affects perception - and all the DA2 characters' suit them perfectly; you get a clear idea of their personalities upon first seeing them.

Everyone in game is gorgeous because most people playing are not and want to live vicariously?

I always just assumed that they had upgraded their engine, or had simply gotten better at their design - and as a result they made them closer to what they had always wanted them to look like.
Everything looked so much smoother in ME2, including the NPCs.

the grand cleric wasn't a looker neither was Meredith. some characters are beautiful as part of their characters. anora used her looks as a way to manipulate people.

I've gotta say, I would kill for a not-so-skinny lady that's still considered pretty. Like, a normal-looking human instead of someone who's waist could fit in my fist. Dunno if it's just me being a butthurt chub-ball, but still.

But someone made the claim that buff, chisled males are not the primary female sexual fantasy, and I find that awfully sketchy so I asked for proof of this.

No one has given any.

Here's the thing: your ignorance is not my responsibility. I know you want proof, I know you want hard data. You want bar graphs and statistics and theories tested in labs. I get that.

Think about what you're asking me here. You're saying, "You know, keightdee, I just don't believe you. The evidence of your eyes and the eyes of other people in this thread don't matter to me because they're not wearing labcoats and carrying a degree in a related field." (But wait! I am carrying a degree! Come back!) You're saying, "I could try to find this out for myself if I really cared, but I don't care, so I'm asking you to spend hours digging through your university's electronic journals for an article that directly addresses the topic we're discussing."

Ok. That takes a long time. Are you going to pay me for that time? I've got other things to do. And what happens when I find the right article? Are you really going to read all 40-odd pages of academic research and go, "Wow, they're right!" Because, frankly, I don't believe it. And anyway, what field should we even look in? There're so many! There's human sexuality, biology, women and gender studies, anthropology, sociology, history, maybe even literature??

Let's say I have found some interesting academic research. How would I link them to you? They're behind a paywall. Do you have access to JSTOR? Because I can hand you all the citations in the world, but if you can't access them they're meaningless.

Listen. It's not my responsibility to teach you these things. I paid my dues (I'm still paying them in the form of student loans ;__;) by sitting in thousands of hours of classes learning about culture and gender. I've written hundreds of pages about culture and gender. I don't care if you're convinced. I don't care if you change your mind. I did the work because I wanted to. Now it's your turn.

I want to have your babies

I agree. Not every woman looks "feminine" or every man "masculine", as stupid society thinks it's the "norm"... and I really liked Aveline, physically and mentally (even if she's serious all the time lol).

If she was romanceable, i'd totally go for her.

Nah, buff chiseled males as far as I understand are less a sexual fantasy of women, at least the overly muscular types are not anyway. For example: Superman and most heroes in comics are just too muscular, the muscles less say that they are handsome or sexy as they are super strong. This is not attractive.

that said, many women and men find realistic muscles can be incredibly attractive. Honestly Jacob was one of the few Male characters that was truly sexualized. It was even a bit creepy how sexualized he was. What I mean is the game and everyone else judged him on his looks, not like Fenris tattoos, but his actual attraction. On the other hand almost all the other male characters are handsome/sexy without anything really focusing on it. Leliana was similiar, beautiful without making it a thing. Morrigan on the other hand was much more sexualized. Alistair was handsome and sexy but that was not his main focus which was his personality.

All of this is more broad, as I am asexual and find none of the characters sexy, but I love Isabelas normalcy and plot, and Zevran really is sweet when you get past it. Point is there are two types of muscular characters, those that appeal to women, and those that appeal to men. And even so, women will often go for slight muscles or none at all as the face is a huge thing for attraction.

This is generalization because...women and men all like different things, and saying women like X or men like Y is not always true or even mostly true. The real difference is are they sexualized like Jacob, Vega, Jack, Miranda, and Morrigan or Samara weirdly enough or not like Leliana, Anora, Talis, and most male characters. The fault isn't that they are sexy but that they are focused on their looks so much it defines them and how they are portrayed. Nothing wrong with sexy, just with being sexualized.

There's nothing wrong with being muscular, but there is a limit. I'm not exactly turned on by the idea of a guy accidentally crushing me to death between his thighs.

Coleman is just one giant, throbbing neckvein and Cutler is the same colour as my mother's purse.

I think, seriously, personality and presence are what most people are attracted to though this would be difficult to show in a game.  Yes, pretty and in good shape are both nice, but I have met men who were short and not-great-looking who were charismatic as all get out and had no problems getting any woman they wanted.

My older son is an example of this in that he's really, really skinny (115 pounds at 5'11), with a good looking face and a gregarious personality. Girls love him. They don't love him because he's got a great body, he certainly doesn't dress fashionably (he can't -- clothing doesn't fit him), he hasn't had his hair cut in four years so he's no where near what would be considered well groomed. But there is that something there.

I think it's confidence. He honestly doesn't care what other people think and has an amazing ability to laugh at himself. Whatever it is, it's appealing to many (much to my great fear :D).  But could this type of confidence be portrayed in a game?  I don't think so.  A lot of real attraction has to do with chemistry, and I don't think you could actually have that with video game characters.

Anyway, beauty is in the eye of the beholder as the old saying goes.

I hope there are lots of good looking people in DA3 because they're fun to look at.  But moreso I hope for lots of deep characters, both romancable and not, who I can feel like I'm bonding with.

I finally found it, many women are sexualized in games one of the few games that do so to both genders is this one, Loren the Amazon a sort of indie version of Bioware games with companions and friendships although turn based combat, not advertising, but I felt I had to give credit to the game I post pictures of... An example of a man sexualized in video games, the armor is for show not for actual usePosted Image
