I think we'd have to establish what is a comparable sexually objectifying example of men, considering Kratos is not such an example. Is it the bishonen characters in anime/JRPGs? Or do they appeal more to male ideals in Japan just the same..?

(Is it complex and not so perfectly segregated between ideal and objectified? Probably.)

I know some characters, like Sasuke (from Naruto) have quite the female fanbase - even outside Japan.

The difference there is that the "Adonis" physiques in male characters that you're referencing are a male power fantasy, not your common straight woman's sexual fantasy, whereas "sexy" female characters are straight male sexual fantasies and not female power fantasies. (And anyway, should "we" be catering just to straight people? Duh, no. And Bioware doesn't, bless them.)

I would love to know how you know this.

Look at SWTOR, all races share the same body, only the heads are different, but that is not the issue, the male body having humungous chest size, V shaped body and female body are barbie dolls-like.

Uhm.

Wut.

Swtor actually has a pretty decent variety when it comes to your character torso. You've four to choose from per gender, and all.

Err what?
Because someone decided to use two body types to make a bunch of screenshots you are trying to say that those are the only two that exist?
If you were to actually scroll down far enough on your first link you actually SEE some of the different ones too.
Have you ever even touched the game and made a character on it? Or are you randomly grabbing screenshots from across the internet?

I've pondered this thread for the past day. I'll leave this as my official opinion:

If you are going to have hot girls with no clothes, there better be just as many hot guys with no clothes.

Sure! Since we've already gotten the DoA cast in Sterling's video, we'll add some of the males from it too! :P

I'm curious to see how a handsome male companion that shows as much skin as Isabela would be received.

This depends. I've noticed most male gamers really don't give a crap if a guy is half-naked as long as he doesn't hit on them.

You know there are female gamers too :) .
But I've seen on youtube people that made aveline's and merril's body identical to isabella'd one (clothes included) and tha have changed their face to make them look prettier to his standards.

I mean I have modded Zevran and Ander's faces to make them more attractive, so this is not something that ONLY straight guys do.

Very true.
But still, I don't think a male character (even one who was created with good looks at the very top of his list of qualities) would have his appearance scrutinized and picked apart by people the way a female character would.

Of course, we still have sexism in the world everyday we see perfect looking people telling us how to live, and games reflect this, is just normal.

In a modrage I modded everything and everyone in DA:O (wardens have warden armors from DA2, elves have the same facial features, tranquil have the brand etc. So I modded everything except Alistair and Wynne, because they simply wanted to beautify them without a reason, there were lots of mods to make Wynne look younger, while I just wanted her hairstyle changed to something more elegant. Why would you take the maternal figure of Wynne and change her in a 20 year old? Same old reason.

This is not actually true.  During the Middle Ages, people did indeed clean their teeth.  A lot of what people assume about that period is just a load of so much crap.

It still sucked.

They didn't care when Zevran did that.

I wasn't really here for Origins. But I remember people losing it because Anders flirts with you that one time.

The thing with Anders was more "The hell is going on here, he's nothing even close to the character he was in Awakening" than it was "OMG HE'S GAY GET HIM AWAY FROM ME"

Though the fact his introduction constantly brought the latter fact up -and- gave you a hefty rep hit for rejecting him also helped alienate a lot of players. On top of that whole character bait-and-switch thing.

I think Zevran does the same thing. Though there may be a dialog option that avoids a disapproval hit with him.

Zevran's is trickier to hit, since his isn't in the very first conversation after you recruit him. You've also got several chances beforehand to let him down gently, without telling him "Ew, go away" like you're forced to with Anders.

I cared. I mean, it was like caring about the dustiness of your room, but still. It was there...somewhere.

True. Anders was a pretty poorly written character in DA2 in a lot of ways. Though I've mostly blocked out a lot of his worst moments

Perhaps with the new systems games will be able to support more variety. I think Bioware has a good handle on this though, I am really liking what has been revealed of Dragon Age 3 so far and just what their games have been like in general. We do get to put our mark on the player character in these games anyway... just look at some of the Shepard's out there. The character isn't trapped in some catalog standard.

Anora does look like Loghain. They have the same structure, the bones or whatever. He just looks like he has spent more time getting beaten to a pulp out in the sun, & she looks like she's a pampered palace shut-in. Loghain probably owes allot of his appearance from contact with very heavy blunt objects with unfortunate frequency.
