Liara was trying to fix Shepard. That made people hate her even more.

That's because they forced it even when she wasn't LI. If instead BW gave those scenes to respective LIs, I very much doubt anyone would complain.

@ OP - I like the idea. Maybe not in a straight "fix me" way. But to acknowledge that PC is actually human, has doubts, regrets and needs support (which can be provided by LI)? That I would like a lot.

I really dislike fixing/protecting people. Almost as much as I dislike it when people think I need fixing/protecting. So this romance wouldn't be for me.

You get that a lot, eh?

I do actually! Little known fact: introversion is neurosis.

I like the idea but it would probably have to be a little more subtle than with the previous LI's. Perhaps the thing to be fixed would be somehow tied into the background you choose?

People are getting to hung up on the word "fix".  I used t just in referance to how they have writin past romances in DA games.

Like I said it would work fine if like after major plot points in the game you get the option to express your fear you are maybe doing things wrong.  It dose not have to be you getting over the death of your dog when you where a kid.

So you mean like they did after Hawke's mother died? Or what all of the ones I've seen do in the pre-Cronos scene in ME3?

That is good when it happens, though the romances are always going to be mostly focused on the NPC because they've actually got a defined character.

Sounds like a decent idea.

Jacob in ME2 is an example of a stable no-drama relationship, so long as your Shepherd makes herself available. As you can see, he was so popular with the player-base he was the only relationship that didn't end in a break-up come ME3.

Wait no, the other way around.

i think it was more the fact that he was one creepy SOB that made people hate him.  The Priiiiizzzee.

^^^ Yeah, pretty much made him the worst option all 'round. He felt rather flat and lacking in any real individual personality imho, and if Shepard players turn out to like that, suddenly he turns into LITERALLY THE CREEPIEST PERSON ON THE SHIP.

Yeah I kinda agree. Maybe not 'fix' exactly, but it would be nice for our LI to ask us how we are. I guess DA2 had that when Hawkes mother died but most of the time the LI's just talked their problems.

I don't know if someone has mention this, but maybe we could have a personal quest that our LI helps us through

It would also be nice to romance a character who is a well-adjusted adult for once. Someone who has their **** together like Aveline or Varric. I remember being so excited to romance Anders before realising '**** be cray cray, i'm outta here' so I take Isabela up on her offer only to have to fight The freakin Arishok for her!

Bioware why u make love so hard?

Just kidding. I love fighting for the damsels

Isn't that kind of the whole game?

I want BioWare to try and do a normal romance.

One that doesn't involve any "fixing" of anyone, or any cliches, or any other contrived nonsense but it's just two people who like each other for who they are not what they can change the other person into.

I dunno about "fixing", but maybe after you make a difficult decision or something tragic happens (like Hawke's mom is DA2) if your LI would come to see you and ask you if you're okay, try to cheer you up, that kind of stuff, and you're able to choose a response. Seriously, I hated watching my Shepard lament over that stupid kid from the beginning, or Thessia, or god knows what when my Shepard wouldn't be so freaking emo. <_<

We already have such a character who would be perfect for that. Her name is Cassandra Pentaghast.
Now if only they made her a companion and romance....

Regardless of how this plays out, I just hope they spend a great deal of time allowing for character development of both the PC and your companions.

If your talking about Regalyan, that was just a simple flirt. Nothing major or serious.

Ah the desire to be fixed by someone else, I've been there. Doesn't happen though. People have to fix themselves, there is no other way around it. So yes, wonderful fantasy, not very realistic.

Bioware's choice if they put it in the game, but if they do, there's going to be another Anders-bashing type movement. And justly so. Someone who's just there to fix you is a one dimensional character and quite annoying to most players. It was done well in Mass Effect 1 though, with your LI picking Shepard up when she needed it. That's not exactly fixing though, that's just being there for each other, and that's about as much as you can expect from a relationship.

Yes pleeeease. I would love a game that allowed the protagonist to be deeply effected by the sht they are seeing/experiencing. As is mentioned, ME3 tentatively allowed this by having our Shepard's experience nightmares; the problem was that Shepard could not vocalize their feelings on these dreams, and the dreams themselves were bizarrely attached to this one random kid...who went on to become the biggest symbol of ME3 Failure that ever was or will be (StarBrat).

I think having a despair demon, or some other Fade/demon encounter, could be a really neat opportunity where our companions have to pull US, the player, from out of a bad emotional situation. Or, if you're not inclined to be rescued, there could be an option where you burst yourself out of the influence.

Of course, this will never happen as people will cry that their agency is being taken away and that they don't want to roleplay an "emotional wussy".

Nooo... do NOT use the protagonist for internal conflict in an RPG. Or else let us choose NOT to have it. Otherwise you are defining something in their personality itself, which is against the cardinal rules of roleplaying.

you know its kinda funny considering what Samarua said about him, (he needs to decided who he is) which I think was the character flaw they where going for. And they hit it, pretty much a do what is told person. "thus flat" So pretty much could have been replaced by anyone else and it would have been the same thing.

It was only during ME3 where he stood for something. (but ended up betraying FemShep in the process, tho honestly it did seem more like a casual sex thing anyway, at least from his point of view)

You know you can't resist it B)

To come back on topic. As Tootles said, it would be great to have a situation where the companions/LI saves you from something. A good example for this kind of situation would be Arkham City. There is a scene near the end of the game where Catwoman saves Batman instead.

Being saved from an external predicament would be cool, like the Fort Drakon companion quest. Nothing specific to romance characters there, though.
