And why is it ridiculous?

Well, we can start with your insinuation that people are going to be using a completely anonymous survey as a dating site, then move on to your assumptions that a majority of women will actively try to seek out the creepy Nice Guy behavior they get when it's revealed that they like video games, and that women who play video games don't very often get ridiculous "oh yeah sure but just like CELL PHONE GAMES right? Those don't count I mean REAL GAMES," and conclude with the fact that a lot of times when people lie on surveys they lie in order to tell the person giving the survey what they think they "want" to hear. So, actually, if anything at all, women would underreport their gaming habits, not overreport them.

Having diverse LI's doesn't make Thedas seem utopian at all. It just reflects reality - gay people didn't only start appearing in the twentieth century. We've been around since the dawn of humanity.

Regardless of one's opinion on all LIs being open to both genders, I don't see how you can think that's either diverse or a reflection of reality.

It's not malicious lying. Merely fudging your perception of yourself. We all do it.

Whether it's good or not is not my concern.

In this thread(and in the gaming scene as a whole, for that matter), whether it's good or not is the one thing that matters, not whether it's true.

The girl being complimented in the comments under a YouTube video where she talks about games, isn't complimented because she talks about games, but rather because she's female and attractive. That is sexist, and that is what this whole thing is about.

The two can co-exsist.

Wait what? So if I say a guy is hot I'm being sexist? @_@

Anyway, lol@ the person who said DAO gave them the impression that Thedas was homophobic. I got the complete opposite impression. I wish the real world would be more like Thedas, so we wouldn't have to have Pride parades and all that stuff. In Thedas, homosexuality/bisexuality is just there and thats it. No big ruckus made.

You're saying a girl can both be attractive and play video games? Where'd you get that idea?

But seriously, I didn't mean to imply otherwise. The point I was trying to make was that, for females, physical appearance is the primary reason for the compliments they are given by the internet, something that isn't the case with men. Differential treatment based on gender? How is that right?

No. It's sexist when the talents and abilities of the person in question are ignored in favour of discussion about their physical appearance, whether positive or negative.

Asking you to not sneeze on me is not the same thing as asking you to not sneeze.

The fact is that genders are different.

They are. So yes, differential treatment is justified. You could even argue that such treatment is not only justified, but ethically necessary.

It wouldn't be sexist if men were treated the same, but that isn't the case, and has never been the case. It doesn't change the truth of your comment, but I think it's an important aspect of the discussion.

Lol so calling someone attractive is sexist? I mean sure shunning their talents and what they say is obnoxious and offensive but just because its offensive doesn't mean its sexist.

They collect a lot of statistics behind the scenes that's sent back to Bioware's servers - and it's an opt-out system, so virtually every player who connects to the internet goes into their data.

It's apparently a powerful development tool, because they get access to how players actually play the games (rather than what they write about on forums, say).

One of the first things I do before I actually create my first character (after checking the graphical settings, I think). I switch that "online component" off. At least since I know that they introduced it.

If the differential treatment were solely based on individual merit, I'd agree. But that's not the case, and never have been.

I hesitate to put any weight behind the 24% same-sex remark when we know that a good portion of male players will roleplay a female PC and select the lesbian romance.

Being honest here, I know I'd rather look at a prettier woman talking about a game, but it wouldn't stop me from viewing any woman regardless and I would respect their knowledge on the matter regardless of their look. I just know what I'd prefer. I'm assuming most are in the same boat, in terms of the opposite or same sex, whatever you're into and I'd be calling bull**** if you would rather look at a train wreck than something nice, especially if both had the same type of knowledge and "attraction" in relation to what they're speaking about.

Beauty is a good thing. We shouldn't be ashamed to appreciate it. And yes, that inevitably necessitates less attractive people will be appreciated less in comparison.

It's a price worth paying.

Because it's so bad for the company to know which aspects are of interest to you?
I highly doubt that someone from Bioware is going to come over to toiletpaper your house because you're a guy in RL and you had your virtual male character make out with Zevran.
I mean, it's Zevran - it's all good! :D

Actually, it would be. If a man or woman treats anyone like that, it's sexist. Hence my gender neutral response.

When ingored - yes.

But a viewer can appreciate both  physical appearance  and talents/abilities at the same time.
If i see a beautifull woman perfoming a beautifull song with a beautifull voice, i can comment not only regarding her perfomance but regarding her looks as well.

I always thought sexism was treating someone in an inferior manner based on their gender. That does not include treating someone differently based on their gender.

Or should I stop helping women pick up their books after they trip?
