No. It's sexist when the talents and abilities of the person in question are ignored in favour of discussion about their physical appearance, whether positive or negative.

When ingored - yes.

But a viewer can appreciate both  physical appearance  and talents/abilities at the same time.
If i see a beautifull woman perfoming a beautifull song with a beautifull voice, i can comment not only regarding her perfomance but regarding her looks as well.

Exactly! And that is not sexist. If you were to imply that she was only successful because she's pretty, that would be sexist.

Being attractive isn't everything, and should absolutely not be treated as such.

But you know what?

It isn't nothing, either.

I always thought sexism was treating someone in an inferior manner based on their gender. That does not include treating someone differently based on their gender.

Or should I stop helping women pick up their books after they trip?

And in all my examples, I've cited people being treated inferiorly based on their gender.
If your motivation for helping the woman pick up her books is that she's too frail to do so herself, then probably. If it stems from a desire to be helpful, and you'd do the same for anyone who dropped their books, then by all means continue.

Not at all, but you should not get upset if the woman helps you pick up your books if you trip.  Helping someone has nothing to do with gender.

We all know Chobot didn't get her job because of her skills as a journalist.

Sexist perhaps, but also true.

How is this directly related to Dragon Age Inquisition again?

That wouldnt upset me  However in western culture there is certaibly a double standard for men and women.  Culturally a man is expected to help a woman.  The woman is under no such cultural pressure.

This thread will be locked shortly unless we return the conversation to Mr. Gaider's GDC talk. Which I am more than happy to do, because this discussion is going nowhere fast.
I particularly enjoyed the section where he discussed his learning experiences as part of the Old Republic team, and how he sought out the opinions of women, which was then echoed by his consulting with a trans* woman for the writing of Maevaris. That was wonderful.

I'm sorry, but when anybody becomes upset because of that, he/she has more serious problems than being "sexist".

Like a "screw loose" problem.

I know absolutely nothing of the sort. I have read that she has a love for video games, anime amd manga. If she did just get the job based on her looks that says more about the people who hired her and where their thoughts are.

This entire thread should be moved to off-topic section honestly, it had very little to do with this board in the first place.

Could someone provide a link to the paper that states that 47% of all gamers are female?

It's all related to a story, actually.

Empress of Orlais tripped, fell and Alistar helped her to get up, thus insulting her Female Dignity.
She called him a chauvinistic pig and Great War started.

That's not from the paper. That's what Merizan has said a couple of times. The paper cites a 40% figure from the Electronic Software Association in 2004, so it's almost a decade old.

I'm sure those skills helped a bit but she really was on there to tittilate the audience, when she left they replaced her a former Playboy playmate almost instantly. Then Chobot went to The Daily Show to try and be a corrospondent, she wasn't funny so she didn't last long.

And the audience has only GROWN since then, so you shot your own argument in the foot. Well done. Now please go away.

I can't seem to find the actual paper. The only thing I can find is a couple of slides stating that 45% of gamers are female. It does not contain any actual data, details on  how the sample was acquired or criteria used to define "gamer".

$20 bucks says that number includes women who play fluff like phone and facebook games as "gamers".

The fact is that genders are different.

They are. So yes, differential treatment is justified. You could even argue that such treatment is not only justified, but ethically necessary.

How true.  It would be wise to keep the genders separate, then.  As long as their access to products and services are relatively equal, that would be best for everyone involved.

But what if Alistair's a drunk? How would meet the Empress? Save import strikes again! Fast Jimmy was right!

I'd wager that a good 50% or more of male gamers exclusively play stuff like Call of Duty or Madden. But they count as "gamers?" Of course they do.

Anecdotally, apart from myself, the people I know personally who consider themselves huge fans of Bioware and their games are all women. If you take this to places like tumblr, and even this forum, I would say "serious" female gamers are *very* well represented.

It's a big tent.

Because true gamers never play those.
