I've read the first three and loved them. Stephen Donaldson has a way with words where even Tolkien might struggle. It's simple, yet sophisticated; verbose, yet enchanting.

His character, Thomas Covenant, must also be one of the most complex characters I've read in any novel (though albeit, he doesn't develop as much as I'd like him to.)

The Land (the setting in which the novel is based around) is also unique and unusually lacking of any fantasy cliche associated with Tolkien. He makes you care for The Land and everything in it.  And this is made apparent when he seriously starts to **** things up and everything you have grown to, familiarised yourself with and accepted as law is turned upside down.

I'm currently reading the first book of the Second Chronicles and the last sentence is made apparent with that one. The moment he discovered something which was once a fruit of healing, is now poisonous really paralleled my own feelings too. Yet, I'm afraid that as I continue on, the books will lack in quality and by the end become another "Dark Tower" if-you-get-my-meaning.

I really hope not, since I'm enjoying the **** out of 2:1 so far, and it would be a shame if by 2:2 they start to decline in what made them special.

Yes it is. There are three books with each Chronicle (except the last in which there are four.) Each Chronicle is about 1000+ pages long. There are three Chronicles. The first two were written between 1977-1983. The third started in 2004 and the last book is coming out this year apparently.

I read them when they were first published and have read them several times since. One of mu all-time favorite fantasy series. I'm eagerly awaiting the conclusion to the final series and have resisted the temptation to read the first three books in that series so far. But it's tough to resist.

I personally loved the second series all the way through as well. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Yeah I've read the first and second trilogies as well (but not any of the 3rd as yet) and the 2nd trilogy is as good as the first.

On face value, yes, you could make that comparison. But there's a hidden level of depth and complexity to the entire universe. So far, I still doubt it's real.

read it years ago... liked it, was told not to read the 2nd trilogy... read it!

...and regretted it.
So Don't Read The 2nd Trilogy.

or do and make-up your own mind.

2nd is sort of really dark. Darker than people who cheerfully profess to "want dark" usually can stomach. Donaldson was that way for awhile. (And on that subject, don't read his 'Gap' series)
It doesn't mean his writing gets worse or that the story loses its magic.
3'rd chronicles seems maybe set to reverse the mood somewhat. So continue reading.

What is really, really good are his collections of short stories! These are a must read! They contain a whole handful of really magnificent gems. The collections are titled 'Daugther of Regals' and 'Reeve the Just'. Totally awesome.
