At the end of Bait and Switch Fenris says to a mage Hawke something along the lines of "You're a mage - I should have seen it sooner." I agree with Fenris. How was the staff not a dead give away. And Cullen! Hawke has a staff and uses magic in front of Cullen in Act I, if a mage. I guess the magic part can be brushed away by Cullen, since he probably thought it was coming from one of the demons or something, but still, the staff. Helloooooo. Can a non-mage use a staff?
Though in DAII some of the staves - such as the Magister's Scythe - look like some sort of pole weapons. Maybe that's why people didn't realize Hawke was a mage. They thought the staff was some other sort of melee weapon. As for the more traditional-looking staves, perhaps people thought that the reason they saw someone carrying around a giant, wooden branch was so that they could hit people they don't like with it.
That's the only explanation I can think of, and I think it would be cool if it was in Inquisitions. I'm not saying it will likely be or that I expect it to be. I just think it would be an interesting idea. Not to mention warriors can't use bows and crossbows like they could in Origins, so it would make up for that loss.
EDIT: I changed the title, happy? I know scythes were never meant to be weapons. It was an example. AN EXAMPLE I SAY!!!
