Pole weapons in DA: I

One thing that has always confused me in the Dragon Age games - moreso in DAII than in Origins - is the fact that people take no notice of mage staves.

At the end of Bait and Switch Fenris says to a mage Hawke something along the lines of "You're a mage - I should have seen it sooner." I agree with Fenris. How was the staff not a dead give away. And Cullen! Hawke has a staff and uses magic in front of Cullen in Act I, if a mage. I guess the magic part can be brushed away by Cullen, since he probably thought it was coming from one of the demons or something, but still, the staff. Helloooooo. Can a non-mage use a staff?

Though in DAII some of the staves - such as the Magister's Scythe - look like some sort of pole weapons. Maybe that's why people didn't realize Hawke was a mage. They thought the staff was some other sort of melee weapon. As for the more traditional-looking staves, perhaps people thought that the reason they saw someone carrying around a giant, wooden branch was so that they could hit people they don't like with it.

That's the only explanation I can think of, and I think it would be cool if it was in Inquisitions. I'm not saying it will likely be or that I expect it to be. I just think it would be an interesting idea. Not to mention warriors can't use bows and crossbows like they could in Origins, so it would make up for that loss.

EDIT: I changed the title, happy? I know scythes were never meant to be weapons. It was an example. AN EXAMPLE I SAY!!!

Scythes will suite protagonist greately!
Especially if we will have a chance to wear black hooded robe and a mask that looks like a skull.

In addition, white horse would be nice.
And an ability to speak LIKE THAT.

You mean the farming tool? I don't want to use a farming tool as a weapon...that's stupid.

I'd think something like a poleaxe or a Lucerne hammer would make a great staff for a mage trying to operate under the radar.

Farming tools can work. It does in china as improvised or exotic weaponry.

Infamously true in D&D too, where the scythe x4 crit multiplier can result in awesome damage output with the right build.

Wooooord. Loved uisng a scythe in D&D.  I agree with this idea. Scythes would make an excellent weapon.
(Does anybody else think the spelling of "scythe" just looks weird?)

For some reason that doesn't surprise me.

In all seriousness, as a weapon for the game, sure I guess for maybe some more unusual weaponry, but I wouldn't overdo it though.

Maybe spears and polearms first, then well go into the bag of tricks for a bit.

I agree that it was hard to play these games as a mage character and not have to say to myself "I'm glad these mage-haters haven't noticed my dress and six foot glowing pole"

Scythes are a mean weapon. Maybe you wouldn't want a full on crescent moon-shaped wheat cutter, but maybe a Dothraki arahk would be more your speed?

Personally, I'd be into additional small arms. I'm really enjoying the sneak-up-and-knife-dudes mechanic in Last of Us, so were a sneaking mechanic introduced I'd be all about it. A scythe is probably a good way to slit someone's throat in that scenario.

But uhh, yeah. I feel weird talking about the best and most exciting to murder polygonal dudes.

yes because farming equipment can't kill people... and isn't readality avalable....

I'm for it, may not be the most practical, but if it gets me a melee mage, I'm really for it

Scythes are really hideously impractical weapons. Have you ever held one? They're bloody unwieldy.

Death gets a pass because he's frickin' Death; the scythe is really just there for show. Unless you sharpen that thing on sunlight, no sane person should be using scythes.

Now polearms, that's a different story.

If Mordin killed people with farming tools, we should do it too

Now, being serious, I don't really like scythes (Too complicated to handle properly), but if they are only available for characters with a very high agility/dexterity, I'll be ok with their existence in the game.

I've never really understood how you'd use a scythe in a fight. I mean you'd always have to go decapitation or delimbing in some fashion. You could stab I suppose but what happens if you have to quickly spin around to deal with a new threat? Your long ass blade will be stuck in someone's guts and if you twist wrong it'll stay there and you'll be fighting with a sharp stick. And that's what spears are for.

They're cool. But they seem impractical.

a polearm with a shorter blade then the farming kind would likely work... probably not the best weapon but useable

see ninja gaiden 2 for scythe awesomeness and balance in comparison to 'ordinary' weaponry.

although i do see your delimbing point. but then again, that's not really a bad point, is it?

No for 3 reasons.

1. A scythe is a tool. Not a weapon.
2. We arent the personification of Death.
3. We arent medieval lawnmowers.

Closest you are going to get to that are Dalish swords.

Scythes can be made into excellent pole arms if you change the orientation of the blade

It was ok in DA:O since you were a Circle mage and Grey Warden to boot, so no one could really do anything to you with the darkspawn running rampant.  But in DA2, I bought the silly item pack and modded my game just so I could look less "magey."  Or maybe the templars in Kirkwall are just especially dim.
