Can anyone reccomend a tutorial that would help with modifying a static model for NWN 2?

The best luck I had with finding tutorials was to search for how to do specific tasks in Gmax (like UV mapping). Most tutorials you find for it will be for other games, but that's fine, because most of it applies to NWN2. Videos are most useful, because you can see what people are doing to navigate and manipulate objects, and how they're doing it.

I saw a basic one on youtube for the trains games which was good. I will follow your advice and do a more specific search.

<picking the lock...>
Although primarily aimed at NwN1, there is some absolutely fabulous stuff (general GMax tutorials) on The Learning Curve.
There is also Hellfire's How to convert a simple placeable from NWN1 to NWN2 which covers some techniques, and his repost Official OEI Placeable Tutorial.

I have a basic question that is not answered. All the manipulation is well covered but I cannot get a file open to manipulate
What format o file is needed to open in gmax, is it the .dds or .mdb Is there a tut that covers file types and structures.
Basics I know but I have never been near anything like this before and it is a black art at the moment.

.dds is the texture. that's basically a flat picture which is wrapped around your model. the .mdb is the model that is made out of polygons. the .mdb is a converted model for runtime the electron engine (nwn2) can process. to load those models into gmax you need a converter. i would recommend tazpn's tools.
to open the vault you need to add this line "69.10.25.55 nwvault.ign.com" (without exclamation marks) to your hosts file, found here: c:\\windows\\system32\\drivers\\etc
after restarting your browser you should be able to access the vault.

Just so you know, PJ, I use those tazpn's import/export plugins that Semper links. And when you have them, you need to use File>Import, not File>Open, and tell it to use "NWN2 MDB importer" in the import box.

Thanks gents, I will follow that advice later .
I also intend grabbing the linked freebie and converting the file type to nwn2 format.
If that is successful I am going to buy one or two of the packs for my birthday prezzie. I will test the process with the free one first.

That works, now I can look to the other tutorials. Mostly I want to do a conversion first though.
