I usually romance Liara as well but on my last trilogy run I went for Kaiden.
Now I do feel a little let down because you are a significant length into the game before you get Kaiden back and can really kick start the romance again. I imagine I'd get the same feeling if I were to romance Ashley.
I usually romance Liara, but.....

Nope. I'm extra careful. I make sure to pick the correct "No." when talking with her. You can't be too harsh and use the evil "Hell no!", or she will try to sex you anyway. I guess she has a fetish for people that say "Hell no"?...Steelcan wrote...

You must pick the middle "No"...

Both characters were there to introduce you to the world. Ashley gave you a brief historical update and was supposed to show you the mindeset most humans were supposed to share when it comes to aliens. Kaidan introduced you to biotics and the issue of transhumanism. His experiences shaped him in a way that made him more tolerant than many other humans. He was also carrying the stigma of being an L2 biotic.Bleachrude wrote...
What exactly WAS her role in ME1? Same goes with Kaidan...why couldn't you keep Jenkins instead? How much of a difference in story would you actually see...
I found these aspects very appealing and would have liked to seem them explored. Alas, ME1 didn't spend much time on character development and from ME2 on all of these aspects got dropped and the characters were mostly sidelined.
They were also set up to be deuteragonists. Both had a place in the universe and a life without Shepard.
And these were the romance subplots that at least touched the question of propriety.
But why do they need to be squadmates? There's nothing that says you can't learn about Ashley/Kaidan via crew interaction a la Traynor and Kelly.
Remember, we're talking about why they have to be actual squadmates and not just regular characters.
