Thanks for putting up a technical forum. I have been having issues with the game going to a black screen after the cinematic in Ostragar. I cannot even cross the bridge and I have to hard reboot. This happened a few times in some other areas as a dwarf noble working my way out of the tunnels to meet the wardens.

I am running XP Pro with all current updates and a ATI HD 3870 video card. I am not the only one experiencing these issues. There are a few threads in general with others having the same type of issues. My system is clean and updated regularly and I can run any current game at full settings with zero issues. I also have the current catalyst and driver from ATI/AMD. Any help, suggestions, etc. would be appreciated. The game has been nothing shirt of awesome up until this point.

Having same problem in Ostragar.Played great for about 3 hours, saved game and came back a couple of hours later.Now as soon as I load a save i get the monitor going into power save mode.Can play any other game I have and spent hours doing burn in/stress tests on comp lastnight without any problems.

Have latest drivers for all components, even rolled back video drivers to 9.7 with no luck.Have seen others post the exact same problem in the same area using about the same set up.

Motherboard-ASUS Maximus Formula, Q6600,XP 32 bit,3.25 gigs of ram,ATI 3870 with 9.10(Now 9.7).

Loved the game while I was able to play.

Just spent an hour with EA tech support. Mind you, this is the downfall I knew would come to bioware. Calling EA is like calling a representative for encylopedia's, minus the intelligence. Everything is scripted and the last thing I was told was it's an ATI driver issue. So I can play any current game at max settings (AOC, Crysis, EQ 2, etc...) with zero issues but it's an ATi issue. How about the issue is in the game  and I am not the only one having this issue. I started with 9.7 and it was worse. Updated to 9.10 this morning same issues. I get told roll back and I asked him what part of worse didn't you understand?

I loved everything about the game up until this crap started and now its unplayable for me. I also love the fine print underneath this forum heading. We are going to get zero help on these forums and contacting EA is even worse. As a long time bioware customer I am really pissed off about this and certainly bioware could give two ****s either. They are billionaires after selling out to the disease ridden EA.

Spent 45 minutes with ATI and they have not heard of this issue. Everyone contact ATI and maybe they can get Bioware/EA's game fixed for us!! This is ridiculous anyway you look at it. Not to mention, I looked at my EA account were they copy the text for support and the heading read "Madden Support"!!!!! WTH, no wonder they are clueless. Another fine company hit with the EA destruction worm.

I so want to play for more than 5min without a crash and think it's already not the best they have made for sure. But it's a great filler while I wait for ME2. I have an HD3800 series card with Cat 9.11/ Win7.

I just can't keep risking these crashes and damaging my system for a game. Every time it happens I need to improperly shut down and reboot.

yeah i have the same problem but only in the town of lothering. when i try to load the save (in lothering) i just closes to my desktop but if i load a earlyer save where im in the magi tower it loads fine. also if i go into the chantry in lothering (i reloaded a save just before entering lothering) it works fine until i try to leave (and go back outside into the town) it crashes to my desktop again.

P.S my computer is above the requirements needed and im using a NVidia 8600 GT graphics card

I am having the same problem near the start of the game. I'm playing as a human noble and when leaving the castle at the start the game goes to a black screen. The cursor is still visible and the sound is going on. Hopefully this will be fixed soon and I won't have to deal with getting a refund from Valve.

Me too same symptoms as MasterCronus - just posting in case it prompts BioWare to actually do something about it.

I'm still having the issue, and I just wanted to post my system specs.

i5 750.

2 5770s.

8 gigs of memory.

Using onboard sound.

I've tried disabling Crossfire and have made sure I've got the latest drivers. I've also tried lowing all the graphical options to their lowest setting, but nothing helps.

So, I've managed to get the game to display again by waiting long enough and then hitting escape a bunch bringing up dialogue. Going through that I then was at Otagor camp and the game was visible again.

Somepeople have posted that if you UNDERCLOCK that card by 50Mhz it helps... also try disabling all the intro movies with the game starts.. see if that helps....

edit DragonAge.ini under the bioware folder that's in your docs folder

[Movies]
DisableIntroMovies=1
FirstRun=0
0=dragon_age_ea_logo.bik
1=dragon_age_main.bik
2=(UNASSIGNED)
3=(UNASSIGNED)
4=(UNASSIGNED)
5=(UNASSIGNED)
6=(UNASSIGNED)
7=(UNASSIGNED)
8=(UNASSIGNED)
9=(UNASSIGNED)

Also try going in there and disable shadows and framebuffer effects and see if that helps also :)

Also some ATI cards will go black and freak out if tripple buffering is set to 1, if yours is 1, try 0 :)

I LOVE this game but it HATES my computer. I have had almost every issue I've read about on this forum.

1) Seemingly at random, screen goes black. Sometimes the sound plays on sometimes it freezes like a skipping CD.

2) Sometimes it simply CTD's

3) I dread cut-scenes with with dialog options, Leliana's entry into the party for example and the Landsmeet are the worst; game often slows to slideshow fps sometimes with music sometimes without.

4) sometimes it works for hours at a time with no issues at all.

I have tried setting graphics and textures as low as they will go (makes everybody look about as blocky as Shale) and for kicks as high as they will go and it makes no difference.

I was running Oblivion with highest settings and about 50 active mods with no issue whatsoever before I loaded this game. For laughs I went back and loaded it up, started having some of the same issues with Oblivion. DA:O is acting like a freaking virus. Once I completely wiped it from my system everything is back to normal.

I have given up on this game in compete frustration.

Ok this post might just add to the confusion, it did for me atleast.
But it might help resolve the issue as well.

I ran the game smoothly with no problems. Upgraded my computer and reinstalled the entire thing, including the game, this time around with the DLC aswell. Now im getting the same problem as many others in this thread, which is black screen but audio continues (without looping) and im forced to do a hard restart of the computer. The funky thing is that my GFX card is the same, i only changed the motherboard, CPU and memory.

Old specc (the one that worked just fine):
Intel C2 Q9550
8GB Kingston DDR3 1800MHz
Asus P5EQ Premium motherboard
rest of the specc same as the new one.

New setup (the one that fails:
Intel Core i7 975
Corsair Dominator-GT 6GB
Asus P6T7 WS SuperComputer
Gainward ATI Radeon 4870 X2 2GB
Crucial 128GB M255 SSD x2 in Raid-0
Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Also, im running 2 monitors, and when the error occurs both monitors (the one with the game AND the other one) go to a no signal state.

Since the GFX card is the same i doubt that is the problem, but it could be driver related. Thing is that i was finished installing stuff late yesterday and didn't get to do much testing, but i tried several times with DA-O and did a quick test with another game where i could play for an hour with no problem before i had to go. After that i tried to roll back the driver to 9.10 and even removed it completely without any luck. Today im stuck at work and will haveto try and fix the problem via google and not trial and error :P

But after reading this post i saw that DLC was mentioned earlier and im thinking that is the problem, at least in my case. Since that was one of few things changed on the software side, and the computer works fine in everything else.

I have kept an eye on temp's too, but theres nothing suggesting that anything overheats. (i have 6 120mm fans in the case, 2 92mm fans aimed at the GFX card, a huge overclocking type cooler on the CPU eventho its at stock clock, and i even have a fan for the ram modules)

As TallBearNC already said, if you have a 3870 and the game goes to "blackscreen", try underclocking your card via rivatuner (some people said they can underclock via CCC, didn't work for me though)

I had frequent crashes in Ostagar. After underclocking aprox. 10% no crashes whatsoever.

Ok so the tips if gotten and/or found have been tested..

Tried loads of different drivers, no luck.

Underclocked the GFX card by 50MHz, no luck,

Underclocked the GFX card by 70MHz and set the fans to 100%, no luck

Set core affinity to just one core, no luck.

Verified game cache, no luck

Reinstalled the game, no luck

Picked everything except the essential hardware out of the computer, and same for devices plugged into the comp, no luck.

I found turning off all the "let application control" checkboxes in the ati catalyst control panel got rid of most of my crashes. Basically, let the driver control all the graphic settings, NOT the game.

I coupled that trick with setting my CPU affinity to using just one core.  I got 1 crash in about 10 hours of playing.  I also removed my overclocking (both cpu and gpu) so they are all running factory speed.
