I understand that it can be difficult to implement different body models into games, but I just think it would add a bit of realism especially where mages and random commoners in the steets are concerned.
For example, a mage doesn't need great bulging muscles because they're not swinging around heavy swords and axes, and they don't really need to be athletic as they attack from long range yet the male PC in DA2 still had the bodybuilder stature as did every other human mage. Rogues need to be lithe and light on their feet, which would be difficult with muscles like some kind of Greek god. NPCs on the streets still had the giant muscles too and it's unlikely they'd be expecting to go into battle any time soon.
It's not even like a bit of bulk is unattractive because I, for one, quite like it. It's just that the amount of bulk on the DA2 models seemed a bit excessive, even on warriors. No man has arms wider than his head. And next to the skinny, lithe-looking elves, it really showed. Which brings up another topic - could elves be a little bulkier please? I don't see how that wouldn't be lore-friendly as surely elves can have as much variety in appearance as humans. Dwarves too.
----
Edit: From looking at the responses to this thread, I think the most widely accepted view on this topic is that people would like to see a selection of different body types i.e. slim, athletic, muscular, overweight in character creation. The more customisation options, the better. I think the lack of the ability to choose race and origin should be made up for with more in-depth customisation, and we should be allowed to fine tune our PC's bodies as well as their heads. The option to choose from several different builds would probably be easier to implement than a slider because there would less altering of armour models and animations and all that jiggery pokery.

Yes, I hope it applies to women as well, I'm so tired with the typical muscular man/bony woman with big breasts and ass.

Choosing body types is always great in my book.

Animation issues probably make variable body sizes difficult. Different skin textures allowing for a more or less toned appearance might be m ore practical?

No. I want look like good looking stereotypical man, because i am not in real life. Stop putting realism in fantasy game.

What if you're a good looking sterotypical man then?

Other games manage it perfectly well. /shrug

I agree though, I dislike this forced muscular body. Especially for mages. My Warden was a mage, how the **** did he get that body? For all intents and purposes, every depiction of the tower has yet to include a gym.

You do realize you'll have the option to be the "good looking stereotypical man" as well?

I'd love to be able to choose different body types. I think Guild Wars 2 does this in a good way, you get different body shapes and can also choose the height of your character.

Character creation is something I can spend a loooong time on... :P

As much customisation as possible would be AMAZING since we cant pick our race let us at least pick what we look like.

But i doubt bioware will because it isn't in their "artistic vision"

Yes I agree. Oh and if Fenres can swing that massive sword with those skinny little elf arms why couldn't hawke be just a little less bulky.

As long as I can waddle around as a short, overweight, balding savior of Thedas who can romance anyone and everyone, I support this.

I'm okay with muscular men as long as they are warriors, since this is not a JRPG and a teenage boy with tiny arms just look ludicrous wielding as word, but I'm okay for mole slender mages.

Although, the real problem is the lack of a body slide for women in these games. We have though, badass female characters like FemShep and Lady Hawke who are still stuck with the body of an american top model when by logic they should basically have Gina Carano's looks.

That's something that should really be addressed sooner than later.

Now this is an awesome idea. Always loved that kind of unlikely heroes... my fav Skyrim character was a balding, old warrior with more wrinkles on his face than hair on his head.

I remember in Fable how body types worked. Sure, if you were doing a "warrior" eventually you'd become just this giant mass, and possibly also become this purely demonic being, but still. 'Twas fun.

Probably can't do that in Dragon Age though, alas.

Support having different body types choosable at start-up, though I wouldn't mind if they decided it was too much work for too little gain. BioWare managed it well enough in SWTOR, but then having a distinct look is much more important in an MMO and most of the team is probably different.

Fable way of doing things wasn't that great. You couldn't roleplay a "fat balding hero" since being a warrior would always result in a certain kind of look. I prefer way more a starting body slider. Dragon's Dogma did it quite simply: a slider with "Muscle --- Fat" and slider for the overall body mass, so that you have a choice between a massive hulkling of muscles and a simply incredibly fat body if you want so.

There are multiple stereotypical good looks - like the very cut lithe built in the OP, frankly.

Fine-tuning all the different armour models available for each possible phenotype is also a large factor, as far as I know. Depending on the magnitude of the variation you could also be looking at a situation where it would be necessary to fine-turn cutscenes, as was the case with DAO.

This is still something I'd appreciate, though, even if it were to just boil down to a couple of options (e.g., slim/muscular for males).

I'd love for them to include options for us to select our characters body type rather than just having a single one.
