In my opinion, the true leader is one who succeeds in turning his former enemies into his greatest allies and give them a chance to do what they always wanted: serve their people. And that was the model (personified best in Prophet Muhammad imo) I followed when I spared Loghain. And the way he was written and portrayed (awesome voice acting) just strengthens my resolve to spare him. But that's just me, in the playthroughs that I identify with the most. Some of my other PCs will kill him for various reasons.

I think it's very well summed by the assassinated former president of Israel, Yitzhak Rabin: "You can only make peace with your enemies, not with your friends".

I always saw recruiting Loggy as the best way to resolve the problems brought up by the civil war. Politically speaking, it is definately a good thing to have the leader of the other side of a civil war swear fealty to you.

I looked at it another way - he swore fealty to Cailan and look what happened to him. I really had no reason to trust his oaths. Not to meniotn that without the leader, the other side loses it's power base.
Strikes me as a lot safer move to make then to spare him.

How I wish for an option to banish him.....

It always seemed to me like he regretted what he had done in hind-sight, but probably would have done it again had he the chance to do it over, not seeing another way out of the situation.  He's just the kind of guy who isn't afraid to make despicable choices if that's what's necessary to get the job done the way he sees it needs to be done.

This is the cruical part for me. That.
Well, and everything else you written :P

Me: Plot holes.  Look, if you don't do this interview, the Orlesians win.

Haha! Love that line.

Hey, are you Jack Kirby's daughter? :P

I admit to nothing, but I ...highly approve of this sentiment, regardless.

Whenever I think about making Anora queen, or sparing Loghain, I tend to think about Alistair's line...

"They are the sort of people who think they can fix everything, everyone else be damned."

So when it comes to Loghain's intentions, no matter how noble..I still see him ultimately as a selfish, callow (that word!) shell of a man. I dont' hate him with a rabid passion or anything - he's a fictional character after all - but ultimately all his good for Ferelden speechs boil down to 'good for *my* Ferelden.'

He's unable to see the bigger picture at all, for all of Thedas as well as just for Ferelden. He's not selling the elves into slavery for Ferelden's army, he's selling them for *his* army. He left Cailan at the field because his Ferelden didn't deserve *that* sort of king. Beforehand, Cailan always came around to Loghain's way of thinking and Anora says as much.

In his inability to go outside of himself he dooms not only Ferelden but himself (especially when it comes to my Wardens letting him be executed and Alistair put on the throne...though I will try it eventually.) I don't know much about his character in Stolen Throne or the Calling, but I will tell you that in the game, he's far from the hero people claim he is. He ends up being little different from Howe- a selfish, cowardly thing that looks out for his own interests. Howe actually is a better man, because he admits to it. :P

For me personally, that summed up Alistair during the Landsmeet. Loghain's questionable actions were because he had a narrow vision of what doing right thing for the good of Ferelden was. Alistair has difficulty looking at the bigger picture as well. He's so focused on killing Loghain, that he doesn't want to consider whether what's best for the good of Ferelden must take precedence over his feelings. Riordan's suggestion to recruit Loghain, and the Warden's subsequent consideration of this can throw Alistair into a tantrum, resulting in him demanding to be placed on the throne. Hardly the most rationale choice for a ruler as Anora points out.

I tend to follow two paths. Alistair kills Loghain in combat and my Warden marries Anora, or Loghain is allowed to live and Anora and Alistair marry.

Fun interview and excellent job in crafting such a wonderfully flawed character!
