I play male pretty much exclusively in make-your-own character games. I've loved me some Tomb Raider, and I have no issues with female protagonists, but if I'm going to make a character (and then roleplay them) I roleplay my own gender.
anyone else not have a go-to gender for their characters from game to game?

I play male because I am a male and I like immersing myself into the role.

My main warden is male (he´s a dwarf), while my main hawke is female. It depends on what fits each character better for my personal tastes, considering things like class, romances available, npc interactions, look when armored, voice acting, etc.

More often than not most of my PC's are female. I do play a male from time to time though.

I mostly play female, particularly in DA2 and ME because I didn't care for the male voice actor. I do, however, have male PCs in DA:O and SWTOR.

I don't have a go-to gender for my private life, so go figure. Everytime I start a game with a chose-your-gender PC I simply panic.
"Female. No, no, let's try male. Naah, I want to be a badass woman this time! Mh... but some kind of old battle-worn warrior... this doesn't work! Let's try with Emilia Clarke face. No, I want a Hugo Weaving Warden! Too young... okay, okay, Lena Headey, if I can make Lena Headey it's done. But..."
And that goes on and on for hours. Really, it's almost a torture! Each and every time I start a new game... and when there's a selectable race it's even worse!

I think for DA:I I will mix it up and play a male. I was going to do this for Hawke, but couldn't do it because of the VA =/

Most of the time I play female Wardens and Hawkes since I'm female myself... and most heroes I see in games and TV are males so its nice to save the world as a female.
However I did do an Aeducan male so that I could cover Morrigan's dark ritual. Just because its different and on the off chance that the GodBaby really adds something good to DA:I.

Wouldn't see much fun playing the game multiple times without mixing gender, race, sexuality, color and all that stuff in each playthrough.

I always play as a male character, unless the game canon dictates otherwise.

I never play roleplaying games as myself and don't feel the need to create an in-game version of myself. To me, its the character I'm playing that the story belongs to, and I like variety.
I mix up the genders although I do play (slightly) more male characters than female.
Canon Shepard- female (but I have more male characters than female)
Canon Warden- actually I don't have one, gender ratio's pretty balanced
Canon Hawke- male but again the gender ratio is pretty balanced
Canon Revan- male (though I've done more female characters)
Canon Exile- female (created more female characters, had an incomplete run as a male)
Canon Spirit Monk- male (equal gender ratio once again)
There are some games though that I will mostly play as one gender or another depending on the character creation. In the Fallout games I prefer female characters due to the horribly ugly male character models (females are decent looking), in Elder Scrolls I have about equal distribution, and in create your party games I'm more inclined to mostly male/all male parties (personal preference).

I play males first - because I'm a dude - but I always roll multiple female PCs. My female elf mage was awesome - aside from Cullen being SUCH a creeper.

I don't have a go-to gender when playing any game, I just let the feel of the game direct me toward a sex.
For example, In both DA Origins I have a male and female (queen) warden, but in DA2 I only have male Hawkes. I greatly dislike the male voice for Hawke, but I absolutely hate female Hawke's voice. In ME I play both Sheps, but in the Fallout games I only play females.
The game chooses, not me, I just go along with it...if that makes any sense at all lol.

Canon Warden is a Female Dwarf
Canon Hawke is male (My avi actually)
so yea it depends. All my males in DAO are modded to be able to romance Alistair, and I don't feel like opening pandora's box by trying to import that.

I flip a coin to see which of my main characters, (Garrett and Catherine) I'll use.

I never pick female. I've done one playthrough of ME as a female, and like a 1/4 playthrough of DA2 as a female out of my many many playthroughs of each game. I mostly pick male.

DAO i'm pretty fairly split id say...
DA2 i prefer Male Hawke
Mass Effect i prefer female Shepard.
If we get to use Hawke's beard for male inquisitors in DAI ill be all over male inquisitor.
i am that shallow.

I switch it up a bit. My Warden is male and Hawke is female. My Skyrim character is male. I'm planning on a female Inquisitor.

I recently tried to replay Dragon Age 2 with a male character because I'd never done that before. What a lot of people had said was absolutely true: the male voice actor was absolutely terrible. I complain a lot about Dragon Age 2 but Jo Wyatt really is an amazing voice actress and makes the game a lot more bearable.
In games that let you choose a gender I always make a lady protagonist (at least for the first playthough,) just because every other game forces you to play as a white guy with brown hair, brown eyes and stubble and I think that guy's been boring and played out for decades.

In games where I can make a character such as BW or bethesda games I do so many playthroughs of both genders I have no idea which I do more of.
