I always play female characters, being female myself it just makes me happy to have such great characters to play. Think I might try a PT with a male Hawke before DA:I comes out just to give it a try. A male rouge romancing Merril might be just the thing.

I generally play as female because as a female gamer, it's nice to have the choice! And having a strong, capable female PC that doesn't dress like a hoochie girl is refreshing. I do play as male too, though not as often. I like the subtle differences that Bioware puts in the games.

I only rarely mix it up. Nearly always play my own gender, female.

I'm happy playing either gender, my "canon" warden is female and my "canon" Hawke is male. I think I would get bored if I stuck to playing one gender all the time so I like to mix it up. I never roleplay as myself in RPGs - what I love about these games is being able to spontaneously create characters that are different and unique from each other and from me :)

I'm male. My first Shepard was male (romanced Tali), my first Warden was female (romanced Alistair). I now have two male and two female Shepards, total, and in DA:O I have three male and two female Wardens (granted, I've only beaten DA:O once (female), and only one other warden (male) has made it past Ostagar yet).

If female is available I'll play as female being a woman myself. My first warden, Hawke, and first Shepard were female. I have one male in each. The male warden romanced Morrigan, the female wardens romanced Zevran, but were BFF with Morrigan.

I play mixed, myself. It's great seeing the different romances and other gender-specific content. I have a male and a female Warden, whom I both adore. Haven't managed to slog through DA2 yet, honestly, but I'll likely stick to male there, if only for the fact that I love Nicholas Boulton's voice acting. Jo Wyatt's performance is way too cutesy for me. (That, and the female running animation in DA2 is completely asinine.)

In other games, a pattern I tend towards is that the more apparent that a game is targeted towards a male audience, the more likely I'll play a female.

I'm male, btw.

Still. I don't appreciate everyone acting like my character is ugly after all the effort I put into making him/her attractive.

Well, you'd better stay away from pretty much all of BioWare's old games, then. It's habitual for NPCs to mock the PC's dress and state of hygiene.

I, for one, prefer that to being told how fricken' awesome I am at every conceivable juncture.

Generally male, though I have a female Warden too (Alistair was worth it!).

Altair was disgusting.

And my characters are always beautiful.

I tend to go female, because I enjoy being able to select a female character and know she'll be treated with respect and care :D However, I have played male characters. Not Hawke's, because I will forever associate his voice actor with Vaughn and I stab him every time. I guess it depends on the VO, mainly.

I mostly mess around with the character generator first, and see what I come up with. Then I try to make up a personality for the character, and pick a class based on that personality.

I generally play as a woman just because I am. But I do a lot of playthroughs of most games so I'll usually play at least one or two guys after a while.

I was largely introduced to video games through BioWare's RPGs, so for me, it was just sort of taken for granted that I could play as a badass girl.  It wasn't until I started branching out in my games that I realized that female leads are relatively rare.

I used to play only as female PCs, but these days, I play both genders about equally.

I always play female characters when I can. When I first started gaming, female characters (especially strong female characters) were *rare.* So when I first encountered BioWare games, I was thrilled to play a female protagonist and glad that the heroine was treated (by and large) equally vis-a-vis the hero.

So, yeah, I suppose I have a go-to gender. :)

I went into ME expecting to play through as male, but found that I prefered femShep far more.

With Dragon Age I've had a pretty even mix of characters.

I don't have a canon Warden or canon Hawke. Each of them is canon in their own way.
But as it happens, I always start with male PC.
I once explained to my friend that being a woman, I prefer to stare at a guy's butt...

I play whatever in games. In my DAO playthroughs I always played male but in DA 2 I was female. I just played Fable 3 for the first time and I was female. But then I have played both genders in Mass Effect so it really depends on my mood

Female, always and canon. Male sometimes, just to see how it is but I can never bring myself to finish the game with male.... I guess I get bored easily with them.

As shallow as it is I generally pick a gender based on the character creator. (maybe also the voice acting, how armors look ect). So if the character creator is decent i'll probably play both genders but if it's ****ty then the female characters tend to look better.

I would like to say no, but in all honesty my 'go.to' gender is probably female even though I'm male. My first characters gender is allways based on the character generator a.k.a. I pcik the one when I can make the coolest looking character to enjoy myself. Funny enough Dragon Age Origins is the latest game with a character generator, where I found the male look better than the female, in games like Mass Effect and DA2 I had to play male as the default male to stomach the game

Mind you, I'm not blaming the games engine, but my own ability to craft a good enough looking character. As you can guess I am very into character creation and I'm one of those people, who can spend hours creating the most awsome looking character for when I start playing. This is why I loved DAO when they released the character creation tool early - do that again please :-)

I guess it's a roleplaying thing, as I can also spend hours writing my D&D characters backstory even if I'll never get to use it.

I'm in exactly the same boat.  I CAN create decent looking guys, but it takes me at least double the time as it would for a female character.

I usually start with a female, then decide which characters I'm going to load into future games based on my favorites. My main Warden is female but my main Hawke is male.

I mix it up, in DA more than other games because I've been able to characterize my characters so well. In games where it doesn't really matter, I tend to play male because it's more of a first person roleplaying thing. "What would I do?" ..to some extent, but I always mix it up. So games like Fallout or Elder Scrolls, I've never played female. In DA, because it really does matter, it depends entirely on whatever story most draws my attention, and then I third person roleplay. "What would she do? What would he do?"

So in DA, my first canon Warden was a female city elf dw rogue, and her first canon Hawke is a male warrior. Second canon was male Cousland warrior/female mage Hawke. Third is male Dalish rogue/female (archer) rogue Hawke. Fourth is male mage Warden/male dw rogue Hawke. etc. No rhyme or reason but the story I'm playing.

Sometimes the character just doesn't work as well for me in the other gender, so one will win out eventurally. I played Shepard both genders into the third game, but Shep really works better for me as a male, so I've kind of stalled out on my femShep in ME3. Sometimes it depends on whatever exlusives exist for a particular gender. In KoTOR 2 I loved Briana playing male, but really didn't like the exclusive archivist character if you played female, so my fem playthrough was never completed.

So if the roleplay is significant, I'm highly likely to mix it up. If not, then less so.
