Playng BG1 for the first time ever using BGT (aren't I lucky)  :P

Playing a 'good' party so passed on Edwin and Xsar(?).  Party is roughly 3rd level and I'm currently clearing out the mines.  Being my first play through I'm basically following the bread crumbs of the storyline (although I do explore all of each new map as I'm traveling).

All that being the case am wondering how long until I get a dedicated Mage?  It would seem Dynaheir would be who I'm waiting on. Edit - will take good or neutral npcs.

Have messed around with adding my own using an mpsave but am torn coz I don't want to get attached and then have a story based character turn up later but if it's going to be a while I don't want a PC I add myself being too far behind XP wise.

Advice?

Thanks
KWM

Nevermind, on the next level down the mine I discovered Xan. Lets see how he pans out.

Xan is neutral mage and you have already found him. I have never used him so cannot comment, but if you don't like him or you want to stick with only good allignment there is indeed Dynaheir or you can dual class Imoen.

Dynaheir shoud have already learned fireball when you meet her which is a big plus.
I don't usually pick up Xan as there are important spells he cannot cast. However, it's up to you how you play. There are wands of fire dotted around the game which are good to have before going to the bandit camp, but there are different ways of playing and it is perfectly possible to play without a mage at all.

I've found even a bard to be sufficient, at least for BG 1. Garrick with web spell and wands of fireball can handle quite a few of the tougher fights, but arcane is definitely not required, though does make a few fights easier if available.
