Do you think Mass Effect could work as an MMORPG?

Whether they could pull off creating an engaging mmo that attracts peoples attention and keeps it for the more RTS style combat they'd need, or perhaps they'd take a page from terra and make the combat more action oriented remains to be seen.

I do believe that a multiplayer game set in the ME-universe allows BioWare to be creative and be less conservative as opposed to their single-player games. It would be possible to finally make different races playable as some sort of personal character like Shepard was and maybe throw dialogues, decisions and a nice little story in... and shazam! Otherwise people will always request to play as Turian, Krogan or whatever in every new ME installment. That would be like creating 10 differnt games (not including the choices you can make), it's simply impossible.
So, what to do?:
Sure, the ME3 coop mode was fun, but most of us want a more immersive multiplayer experience. A world you can play without a traditional ending. Maybe building houses, space ships, exploring planets with other players, trading (like BW intended to do in SFX)... there are so many possibilites!!! There are a lot of new gernes and ideas waiting to be discovered within the gaming industry and BioWare should insure that they can pioneer these new experiences. They are certainly talented enough.
In conclusion: Be friggin creative! I could fill probably several books of ideas for new, exciting and working game mechanics and gernes. I bet most hardcore gamers can. Who else is playing tons of games, absorbing everything the market has to offer - they need to communicate with us (BSN). We're free creative directors, for f***s sake!

Many races, abilities, factions and possible hub worlds.
Big space for adventuring.
Elaborate universe with rich history and politics.
All main ingredients are here.

COULD they make an MMO? Sure. Could it be a success? Well, it would probably make a profit for a few years. There'd undoubtedly be a number of hardcore fans who'll play it until it died. But GOOD? Nah.
The other problem with MMOs is they're all basically single player games. You're just part of a multitude of 'one true heroes' all of whom are tasked with slaying the same dragon, or goblin lord, or lich. I remember in EQ having to stand in line at King Crushbone's castle. "Serving party #32! Party #32, your slaughter of King Crushbone is waiting! Party #32!"
So. Back to 'COULD' they make a good MMO....Well, I think it's possible. If it took place either before the Reaper war, or after it. Not during the war, because then it would be static. My theory is in order for an MMO to really be a new game changer, it needs to be dynamic. The players actions should change the world in some small way, and each player should be unique...not just another faceless 'one true hero' who's doing the same quest as everyone else.
Perhaps a combination of Eve online and the PvP of 'Dark Age of Camelot'. With a setting where if you want to be a merchant trading across the galaxy, you can. If you want to start a colony, you can (that'd be a great guild function). Want to join the military? Go for it...but make it like joining the MILITARY. Make people work up to N7 or SPECTRE status. Same with alien military.
Heck, I have a bunch of ideas on what they could do to make a dynamic world with a full story. And if they want to hire me, I'm available <LOL>. But, making an ME MMO? It would be a VERY expensive undertaking to do it 'right'. Which I strongly doubt they'd do

This is the primary reason why I avoid multiplayer games of all sorts. It's one thing to interact with people on a board or a chat, but I do not want to interact with a bunch of anonymous goofballs while I'm playing a game.

It would totally depend on the design of the MMO.
1) Most MMO's are based on the existance of two competing factions. We don't have two such factions in the Mass Effect universe, so that simply wouldn't fly.
However, Mass Effect does have a gazillion fractions. Several big criminal organizations, even more small local gangs, dozens of corporations, lots of species and governments. And they all war and cooperate in various, everchanging compositions. One moment they share a similar goal, the next moment they compete for another goal. THAT is Mass Effect. Mass Effect is NOT Horde vs Alliance, Mass Effect is NOT Jedi vs Sith..
I snipped a lot but I agree with it all. The reason most MMOs fail is because they do the same tired formula that may have made WOW a success but does not work for them. If there was a ME MMO that gave me a decent story, romance, allowed me to build a ship, blast other players out the freaking sky, perhaps do some business with the Vorcha or something, get into shoot outs with players for resources, territory but also allowed me to team up for the same reasons or just do my own thing like crafting tech and selling it and so on I would be happy. If they mixed in some of the multiplayer features, add some fun stuff to do with other players like the arena in the Citadel DLC and make the citadel the neutral zone everyone could meet up at et al, get an apartment, decorate it. I'll buy it. Oh yeah.

You can probably say this about most games. I've played many mmo's myself but have NEVER been satisfied by a single one, even after playing for a prolonged amount of time.
It isn't a good idea by any means, e.g. the upcoming TES Online, mmo aspect will kill the game for me.
Destiny will probably get it right though, if it's an mmo thing i don't get it yet.

Wolfva im glad we could find something we agree on wholeheartily.
The problem of mmos isnt the idea itself but the fact that they are being done terribily. even guildwars 2 which promised to be a non grinder is nothing more than a poor single player treadmill.
If they are able to focus the game on the players interactions with other players. and manage to keep it on a competetive level between the casuals and the hardcore. also they would need to enable the players an option to interact with the gaming world.
Which mean the players will be able to be council members and ambassadors. ship captains and gunnery chiefs.
Thats the ideal world. but in reality this wont happen because it will take too much work, and no one has managed to pull a good mmo has of yet. they are all too tempted to send the players on grinding missions for gear in hope the player wont notice the lack of interactivity and content.

Getting ganked is a inherent part of pvp sandbox mmo.Wolfva2 wrote...

This statement is related only to themepark MMOs.COULD they make an MMO? Sure. Could it be a success? Well, it would probably make a profit for a few years. There'd undoubtedly be a number of hardcore fans who'll play it until it died. But GOOD? Nah.

EVE is a pure sandbox MMO. All events are created by players.So. Back to 'COULD' they make a good MMO....Well, I think it's possible. If it took place either before the Reaper war, or after it. Basically, only true mmorpg is sandbox mmorpg. When players can affect the world around them, - which, i think, it is a point of mmorpg.
Wishing for some safe, coop questing to affect game world - is pointless. It is not going to happen in mmo, because it is a mmo - meaning there is thousands of people who can do the same quest.
It is just not going to happen, ever. Meaning themepark mmo will always be static.
This is a internal conflict of themepark mmo, and it is not going to be solved.
