Just to note: Half-elves are essential 100% human. The offspring lose all elven traits when an elf mates with a human. So a 'half-elf' would be pretty much identical to a human protagonist, so this doesn't solve anything.

I think that's part of the general idea. The protagonist would look human, but he could have an elven parent and have part of a culture that he could identify with, like how Feynriel embraced his Dalish heritage and religion despite being as human as his father.

There's likely some negative outlook about such unions in Thedas. As a player, I didn't have a problem with my Surana Warden getting into a romantic relationship with Morrigan, or with the idea of her having a son who would 'technically' be human. When my apostate Hawke was getting romantic with Merrill, she made a vague reference to children, but I still proceeded with the romance. I imagine that Merrill would tell her children about their Dalish heritage.

I think it was a missed opportunity for the player not to deal with how some people would react towards a noble like Hawke being with an elf, whether it was Merrill or Fenris. How would humans have reacted to Hawke moving Merrill into his mansion (which I think should have been shown, rather than written about in the codex)? How would elves in the Alienage react, perhaps varying depending on how the Champion dealt with the Magistrate's son Vanard? I'm curious as to whether this will be explored in Inquisition with the new protagonist, perhaps with any elven companion who might be a romantic interest.

hmm..yep..It will be neat..if they do give you the choice to pick origin of half elf or at least being raise by elves .. would hopefully story wise during the game. play out with some really interesting reaction..be side just small lines.. , pretty much i am argeeing with you.  if i am understanding you right.. for example if you are givien the orgin to pick raise by elves in the alienage or something like it.. that later in the story..your giving a nice big inpact of story..not by codex but by interaction.becuase of your origins being  what it is..

if your supportive to the eleve,,that it opens up some type of personal quest.. which has a neat impact. but as well..opens up sometime of person interaction with elven companion..or some type of conflict someone saying your just stupid human who doesnt know anything. where you correct them because how u were raise by elves..or how some place wont let you in ..because they find you lower then human because you were raise by evels   over.. all i think i get where you are going..and that would be neat

For the ability to have a younger sibling with pointed ears that you tweak whenever they're not looking and then when they get angry claim it wasn't you.

This is where I continue to pout because I want actual race choices back.

But yeah, I really like the idea of playing a "half-elf."  I think it would only be interesting if the character was actually raised by elves though.  You'd have a character who might self-identify more as an elf than a human because that's the culture he was raised in, but has to cope with the fact that he's biologically human and that's how he's perceived.  Or he may never feel completely human or elven, regardless of what he is.  Or maybe he tries to reject the elves out of spite and it turns ugly.  There's a lot of interesting ways it could go.  Most importantly, it would be a way to play a human character who has real reason to understand and care about the elves' side of things.

If I wanted to play half-human / half-elf, it would have to be with the context of being stigmatized in both elven and human society.

At least to those who know. Outside of where you grew up, people would just assume you're human.

Your father could be elven and tries to teach you the elven identity.

I better have option to suicide because of shame then.

Only if he does traditional elven dances in front of all your friends at school including the guy/girl you wanted to go out with.
