What was the Mother before she was a broodmother?

A lot of people were assuming that the Mother was once a human, since she looks notably different than the other broodmothers. I thought this, too, actually. Laryn was a dwarf before she transformed into a broodmother. As a broodmother, she was stout and fat, where as the Mother's torso is more slender and curvy, resembling a former human rather than a former dwarf. However, the one thing that botches this theory for me is the Children.

Females turned into broodmothers all breed different types of darkspawn.
Qunari make ogres,
Elves make shrieks.
Dwarves make genlocks,
And humans make hurlocks.

If she was once a human, then wouldn't she breed hurlocks? Instead she breeds these "Children". Is it because the Architect freed her? Did she become "defective" and become unable to make hurlocks or whatever it is she would have bred, and instead started breeding the Children? I suppose it would make sense, considering that she calls the Architect the Father.

What I'm really wondering is whether or not Awakening will be the last we will see of the Children.

Regular darkspawn don't hatch fully formed. We had a dev (Gaider?) say they look a lot like the Children at first. Baby hurlocks, baby shrieks - all kinda look that way, apparently.

I *think* the Mother, once Awakened, created the Children who matured into the intelligent Awakened hurlocks we see in Awakening: the First (one assumes her first), the Withered, and... that messenger guy? And the one with the lava golem thing in Kal'Hirol.

So regardless of DAA choices, we could see baby regular darkspawn that look like the Children (which are baby Awakened darkspawn).

Just look at her. Obviously, the Mother used to be Marilyn Manson. And the reason she gives birth to the Children is because she sold her soul for rock 'n' roll.

This is already game canon then? And here I thought I was so clever for guessing where ogres come from...

So if "Children" are the typical offspring of broodmothers, does this mean that when our Warden meets up with the Laryn-broodmother she's not in the... fertile period... of her reproductive cycle... whereas the DAI-broodmother is in the...? Ugh, about all I can stomach of this subject...

Generally speaking, don't mix lore and gameplay unless you can wink while doing it.

DAA needed new monsters, because apparently we have the attention span of caffeinated Jack Russell puppies and need new things all the time to keep our interest. The Children filled that need.

But, if one must rationalize it... I'd go with Laeryn having just started a new incubation cycle (all the polyps around), and the ongoing Blight/call of the Archdemon made the recent hatchlings all wriggle away faster. There are Children in Kal'Hirol, aren't there? Maybe they're from the dwarven broodmothers there. Maybe having bunches of Children around is more the norm than what we saw in DAO.

Awakening is set post Blight, so the inference would be that things are more normal for darkspawn than during a Blight.

Or the writers were just making lore up to fit concepts the developers thought were cool.

How did I not see this before? All his song are blackmasked to be about darkspawn! Stupid, stupid! I should have known.

I'm guessing the Children are perhaps some form not-fully-formed darkspawn, based on the post:

Phooey. I liked the "all darkspawn are children-larvae first" idea. Well, maybe children-larvae are just what happens if the regular larvae don't mature to regular humanoid types... Or Marilyn-Broodmother is just a very strange breed...

I remember Nathaniel saying that the children were a new or different kind of darkspawn, and that dying legion guy at the beginning of kal'hirol said they were abominations even among the darkspawn.

^Don't they crawl out of some sort of pod? I assumed it was them hatching.

She was just a human, OP. The effects of the Reverse Joining the Architect gave her must have, in turn, affected the type of Darkspawn she created.

Actually, Archie Archibold the Architect just gave some Hurlocks his Reverse Joining and that's how they were Awakened.

Mature Children look nothing like the Awakened Hurlocks.
