This thread is all kinds of interesting atm.

Also, since this is about voices - whenever I hear my voice (echo/recordings/singing) I think it's horrible :crying:

Nothing like listening to your own voice for hours on end in editing software to make you less self conscious about it

People I meet are only hostile or awkwardly silent at the fact I'm a lady (usually) . Not that I go around screaming "I'M A GIRL" but a squeaky "Thanks!" is enough to give me away. Other than that I go out of my way to come off as a dude. I should really go the full nine yards and get a voice changer do-hickey. No one would be the wiser.

I always find it weird when I hear recordings of my voice, because it sounds different to me compared to when I'm talking. Not really self-conscious about it, it just sounds strange to me.

I sound quite a bit different over my mic than I do in person at least as far as I can tell from recordings. If people were able to hear my actual voice they may think any number of things since I've been told that I have a bit of a southern accent by some people while others have thought it was Canadian. Maybe the mic distortion is a good thing so I don't confuse anyone.

i've listend to a lot of recordings of myself

and i never stop suffering some really major cognitive dissonance

because it's not just my voice that sounds different - not just timbre or pitch or what have you

i can't hear my accent at all in my head, i think i'm speaking with a very different accent inside and outside of my head

Best idea ever.

Not many have ever heard my actual voice. I'm told it sounds mostly natural.

Girls get special treatment online? That's news to me. I still got kicked from accidental Platinum lobbies after stupid EA match-finding piece of...equipment thought that Silver = Platinum. I don't blame the randoms there, after all, I *would* kick a level 12 human engineer with Paladin 1 too.

And anyway, using your gender to get special cookies is pretty pathetic etc etc.

This.

But you put it too bluntly.

I prefer subtlety.

In my defense, the new name had nothing to do with what's in the OP. It was just an observation since I'm a new girl in N7 ranks:P

So you are a girl

Whew, we are saved a pathetic spectacle

My tendancy to play female characters and dress them up in purple gets me the occasional strange comment or offer online...

Sadly, I think the Australian accent is too nasal and monotone to be considered sexy, and I don't have a genetically engineered perfect arse to compensate.

What if someone poses as a geth/R2D2? Do I get something if I start to make strange beeping noises?

Unless you plan to pay good money for a decent voice changer people will realize you're using one, all the free/cheap ones are recognizable as soon as you say more than a few words.

To me it doesn't matter if people are male, female or something else. Why should it? Unless things become physical in RL, there is no reason to treat people different based on their gender and even that is just a matter of personal preference. I think it's really pathetic to pursue someone online if you know you will never meet in RL. Not that flirting isn't fun, it should just be known to both parties that it's not serious.

Although I have to admit that given the choice I prefer to hang out with women - not because I'm attracted to them but because then I don't have to deal with machoism and other ridiculous "male" nonsense. I try to be nice and helpful to everyone, as long as they deserve it. I don't base that on gender but on personality, intelligence, ability etc. because those are the things that count online.

On offtopic: I found that I tend to copy people I speak with a lot. If I had a regular group of people I play with, I'd sound just like them after a couple of weeks. Other than that I was told my voice is kind of scary sometimes... probably had a cold or something like that.
I rarely talk to people online these days because ... well... I don't care anymore about how I am perceived. I'm not hiding behind a mask/persona, I'm just me, which among other things means brutally honest and there aren't many people who can deal with that.

P.S. Usually my posts end threads, let's see what happens here. ;)

For the physical equipment or the technical programs? The physical equipment required looks cheap enough.
As for the tech/programs. Hmm, it's the internet. Everything can be 'cheap'.

It matters. You just demonstrated this yourself.
