This is the same poll that existed on the old Mass Effect Forum site continued.

Keep voting!

Also, feel free to discuss the implications behind the gender ratio, why more male gamers, why female gamers get so harassed, etc..

here it is:

I never saw the old thread, what exactly am I supposed to be doing here? Do I just list my PC gender preference?

Gaming is a man sort of thing. Guess it all stems with games generally and historically involving violence and killing things. Which is a very guy sort of thing. Plus the computer game industry is still very male orientated. Software design and computer engineering are the sort of courses Males study at University.

Females in nature arnt as temperamental as men and hence dont go for this violence which is embedded in almost all computer games. They go for games like the Sims and the likes. Constructive sorts of games. Ok RPGs do fulfil the storylines which some female gamers enjoy, but it still involves going around killing people which isnt something a lot of them go for. Im not want to stereotype but Guys and Girls always look for different things in life and this is true with games and the gaming industry.

For this reason guys still feel games are their 'domain' as per most things. If you ever played Halo 3 (or simpler FPS) online and bumped into a female, first off its rare. Secondly most them dont even acknowledge their female as in they dont talk, use generic gamertags and use masculine colour schemes. The reason is they often tend to be harassed or very poorly flirted with.

Anyway fortunately the boundaries are closing in. There are ever growing numbers of female gamers and its beginning to become less and less a male orientated domain. Which is fantastic in my opinion.

It's also very dependant on genre. FPS games with halo at the front is not a good example when it comes to gender equality in gaming.

Nice to see that there are a fair amount of female gamers on these boards. We're still pretty soundly outnumbered by the guys if that poll is any indication, but it's heartwarming to see that we at least make up even a third of all the people here.

As a long time female gamer (and tomboy) I have to say - bollocks to the other girls who don't like blowing **** up. It can be lots of fun! :D

That being said though, I do much prefer character/story driven games and tend to gravitate towards RPGs the most... But my second most often played games are action/adventure, so there's lots of violence (cartoonish or realistic) to go around.

I agree. It is about time that boundary is crossed. Not that I am an old gamer or anything, still rather young I suppose, but I don't consider gaming a male only thing and hope that thought will change soon enough.

From my personal observations BioWare games, at least these forums, have a lot of female gamers. If you look - like you said - at a game like Halo the number seems significantly less. I think in all my Halo gaming time (Which is quite a lot) I have never encountered a female player... or at least not with me knowing so. In fact, I think the only times I have actually talked to a female gamer was on World of Warcraft... which I think were at max 5-10.

Not surprising as most guys are indeed idiots and especially on Xbox Live.
It seems that the male/female ratio is highly dependent on the kind of game. RPG's seem to score best in an even ratio.
Oh... before anyone asks... this comes from a male gamer. :P

i disagree that more female gamers are coming and that boundary will be crossed.

I say the number of female players will dwindle in the coming years and currently the max amount of female gamers are on already.Thats my opinion and prediction.

Ugh, people don't fit into your neat little boxes. Women are as varied in tastes and preferences as men. Some women love violence, some men hate it. Most people refer to "Girl Gamers" as one group who all play, and do, the same things. This is as ridiculous a notion as claiming that all Italians love a spicy meat-a-ball.

Male, playing female.

I think a poll with

Male/playing male

Male/playing female

Female/playing male

Female/playing female

Would have been better.

And what are you basing this on? If anything, gamer population will explode with the advent of augmented reality technology. Real world avatars and whatnot. Gaming isn't taboo anymore, it's officially mainstream. We're not some underground culture. Politicians, lawyers, judges, law enforcement, authors, artists, musicians, actors, and the kid at Burger King, gamers come from all walks of life.

I disagree with this "females by nature" argument. It isn't so much "nature" as it is the society/environment/culture that male or female grew up in. Do outside influences create what is "natural"? Natural behavior is not learned.

Look at the toys and games advertised on television for boys versus girls. The games aimed at girls seem to consist mostly of things where you can play dress up and take care of things (like a horse or something).

As a little girl, yeah I would enjoy making a video game character where I can dress her up and then ride around on a horse while taking care of that horse. But then I would NATURALLY also try and see if there's a way to kill the horse. Alas, the cliffs in the game are pre-rendered.

...perhaps this post shouldn't be taken seriously.

On-topic: I'm a female and I like to play video games. :D

If we could figure out a way to get more women to enjoy killing, gore(optional), and violence we'd see em in more online multiplayer games atleast. Atleast the ones that choose to reveal themselves.

Theres hardly any competitive multiplayer that doesn't involve, often violently, doing away with your opponents in some way.

Its still early to tell, but as games are now are encorporating the elements that attract females in general its more likly to increase I think.

Lets be fair to them, Nintendo have really hit the nail on the head.  With the games the Wii has it has attracted a wider family audience and attracted female gamers also.  My girly friends love playing the Wii and I know 3 who themselves own one. The giant marketing campaign the DS has had has also contributed to this.  Nintendo have essentially gone and said "look this isnt a male orientated market based on killing things".   Look at the Wii's sales and you can its been a clear success without a doubt!

However Nintendo's games are in no way blockbusters.  The Sim's is the only big budget game I can think of which tries to pull in females. Games like ME are where all the game innovation comes in and what  pushes the market further.

Games are becoming more like movies. Epic stories and fantasies.  However compare what films you watch to the missus.   You want to watch 'Gladiator' and she wants to watch 'Love Actually'. In this sense although the industry is developing to encorporate females  its still way beyond yet what they seek in some senses.

So maybe your right, maybe it still uncertain whats to come. But as long as developers look to cater towards the opposite gender then its very likely the industry will cater further.   Lets be honest Games are business at the end of the day. They have already tapped the male market to the full. Time to get the other half!

i doubt that sort of thing will last a long time.In the near future i believe that is correct but in the long term i believe it wont be, *by long term i mean maybe500+ years or thousands*I think we live in a great time. Not too long ago things were a lot worse then it is now*imo*.All good things will come to an end.

Entertainment evolves, so no, what we perceive as video games probably won't exist in 500 years, and society's rigid gender roles probably won't exist either. But we're not talking about 2510, we're talking about the forseeable future.
