I wish to make a mage but if I have learned anything about DA:O it is that making a character without a plan or understanding of the game mechanics will lead to restarting said character and frustrasion.
I am fairly burnt out surfing the internet for info so I thought I'd start my own post to ask advice.
I am interested in a less generic build than my default fallback of "burn it, freeze it, zap it, or heal it" and to that end I ask you what spells are worth investing in and synergize with eachother. I am fond of the idea of using the entropy school if it is passable. Also what group members synergize with the kind of mage you suggest. Furthermore I would like to know more about what specializations to go for. Spirit healer seems most valuable for its ability to return one from KOd status.
I already made one mage and botched it up so badly that I decided to make a melee rogue... but I am starting to see flaws in him aswell. :/ I have made about 15 characters in this game that I've brought passed Lothering and have yet to beat the game so a solid build would be nice for this indecisive gamer while I can still keep interest in this game (my fault that I'm losing interest really :/ ) thankyou for any help that you offer!
Need help making a mage!!!

I found that when playing as a mage, you actually make the warrior characters like Alistair or Dog, stay by and protect you from harm while you cast. Same for any of your rogues, nothing perfectly works to keep you constantly safe, cause as the Player Character, most baddies will come after you automatically.
As for which spells work best, I would normally invest in elemental magic, combos with these elements are easier to pull off and if you get attacked by melee fighters, you can use things like Cone of Cold or Stone fist to freeze or push back attackers, till your warrior bodyguard attacks and holds them up so you can get out of harm's way. Basically all magic that will definitely work, not things that have a chance of doing damage, elemental magic, glyphs and sustained sheilds or party boosts for the rest of the team.
As for Specializations there's always Shape shifter, Arcane warrior and Spirit healer, of course you can only use 2 in base game, but I think you can get a thrid special class if you download the dlcs and they allow you to go up to level 22 where you can get extra specialization point. Though if you're not interested in that and you're a defensive mage like me, go for Spirit Healer and pair it with Arcane warrior, which allows you to don better armor and stay alive alittle longer without using tons of heals/poultices.
I never bother with Blood magic cause it drains party members of health.

Thankyou for your advice
I am sorry for being so long in checking up on my post. I find I love the Crowd Control spells allot as well as the straight damaging ones. The one where you turn people into a bomb is fun too! Good thing I play on normal though lol.

IMO spirit healer is a bad combo for arcane warrior, who lives on his sustainables,
those sustainables fall apart when the healing aura has drained his already low mana pool to zero,
and then he is nuffing.
Good stuff to wear as a blood mage is
lifegiver ring with +10 constitution & 3 healing in combat
Blood armor chest with 50 extra life
blood ring with -25% cost for spells
....and some extra points in constitution
The blood wound spell is perhaps the best crowd control & damaging spell in game, with very low cooldown time,
but the arcane warrior should have first priority for many reasons, survivability for starters,
but also the fact that you get more life for every level, meaning blood magic is better used at higher levels
shapeshifter is rotten
