I currently run an older XP on a Pentium 4, 3.8GHz processor with 3gb ram and an ATI FireGL v3100 video card. I have no problem running WOW with 30-40fps in major cities, but I cannot run DA. The error that displays is " Failed to detect a supported video card."
Am I hosed with this platform, or can I simply replace the video card? If the video card is the issue, what is the least I can get away with?
Although I consideer myself to be moderately well informed about the GAMING cards for PCs, so-called "Production" video cards such as FireGL and Quadro aren't included in that category, and I know very little about them. Therefore, it is entirely possible that I am about to create a fabric of gossamer weight, unable to support itself.
Most Production cards are based closely on the far more numerous gaming cards' chips, but with vastky aktered BIOSes, spcifications, and capabilities. The drivers are what is most different from one to another (game card vs. Production card). Among game cards, the Xn00 generation marked the change from Dx9.0"a's" pixel shader SM2 level, and the high end cards' Dx9.0"b" version, which included the basic level of pixel shader SM3.
The X700, X800, and X850 had SM3, while the X600 and downward did not. The previous (Radeon 9n00) gaming card generation was SM1 for the 9000, 9100, 9200, and 9250, and only SM2 for all the rest. My best guess is that your FireGL card is at least as old as the X600, and like it, is unable to handle SM3. It seems to be the X550 card's production side face, and as such, ver low end.
Whether it is a worthwhile option to replace an old FireGL will depend on whether it is AGP or not. If it is, I would not suggest putting any money into the PC at all.
