The truth is that this game is *SUPPOSED* to run poorly on that poor video chip.  (It's even been NAMED, now, as inadequate in the official requirements for Mass Effect 2, it's supposedly that bad, even though it's the very best IGP available.)

The published, official minimum is erronneous, but even when a more practical pair is considered, that IGP (any IGP) is unable to get close enough to the performance level required.

Video: ATI Radeon X850 256MB or greater (either this is wrong)
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT 128MB or greater (or this one is wrong)

(Note: IMO, the practical choices for the two video cards above should be the Radeon X800 Pro, and the Geforce 6800 GS, at least)

And, no, neither of them are readily available any longer.  They are now quite old.

TTBOMK, the HD 4200 is an upgrade to the HD 3200, but still based on the HD 2400 card's design, and if it was the real 2400, it would trail the Radeon X800 Pro at 22%, 36%, and 27% of the faster card's performance.

The developers' choice of the X850 was not based on its speed, but its pixel shader capability, so the second comparison is somewhat more generous, with the 2400 trailing behind at 28%, 87%, and 87% (getting closer).

My dragon age PC game keeps freezing every so often while I'm playing and I don't know why my computer should be able to handle the game. It only freezes for about a minute then works fine again but the freezing has become more frequent recently and I don't know what the problem is.

Can anyone help please

Thanks

It could be any number of things but without your PC specs, nobody can tell you what it is exactly. With the current info, it would all be guesses and wouldn't help you out much.

My PC has:
AMD Athlon dual core 3.21GHz processor
1.75 GB of RAM
AMD 760G graphics card (which i will be upgrading shortly)

is there anything else that you would like to know??

Thanks

Yea, it's the graphics card, as Gorath said above. I actually had to buy a new graphics card for my pc recently because I overworked my onboard card , which was an Nvidia 6150 (I had planned on upgrading it, anyway). I replaced it with an ATI Radeon HD 4670 and it works great for DAO, with all settings on high (I turned off the AA, because I, personally, don't need it on to play). But, yes, upgrading your graphics card as you plan to should fix the issue, as Gorath said.

Ok, not sure if it's a bug or what but the DLC blood dragon armor has disappeared from 2 of my three current characters. Both of the characters have lost the pieces from their inventory and the dwarf in the camp no longer has any... anyone else run into this problem? Is there a fix?

Are you playing Awakenings of Orgins?
If you're playing the former then you won't have it coz it does not import.

Hi

Before patch 1.03, the game worked flawlessly (I've been playing the game since november 09)

I'd never noticed the memory leak issue (may be a few slow down)

Then I installed the 1.03 patch...

And now, the game keeps crashing randomly.

I hope this issue will soon be solved out

My system :

XP 32bit / E6600 / Ati hd 4850 / 2gb Ram

Phil, the X1600 you used before was older than the video chip on the mainboard in your system, so it had fewer shader units, and wasn't really equal to the minimum that Dragon Age requires, but it could come a lot closer to handling Dragon Age's graphics demands. IMO, the X1650 XT is the practical minimum for DA from the X1n00 generation.

ATI has been dragging its feet about releasing an HD 5650 replacement for the HD 4650, and the HD 5670 (replaces the HD 4670) is still above $100, while you should be able to find a 4670 for $65 - $75, online, in USD, shipped stateside.

I have Awakenings installed but am playing through Origins again because i lost my characters. I have the latest patch (1.03, i think) installed...would that havanything to do with it? One of the character files that's missing the armor is for the Awakenings expansion the other is for  the original game.
I have noticed other bugs since the patch too; Crashes, npcs/enemies sunk halfway into the floor or spawning in walls or columns, that sort of thing.

I'm having frequent crashes to the desktop. I tried playing around with various graphics settings and monitoring system temps and voltages while DA:O is running. Everything seems normal when the crashes occur. I hope this gets solved soon as it is very frustrating.

My config: Win7/64, Phenom X3 8450, ATI 4850 512 MB (cat 10.2 drivers), 4 GB DDR, Steam DA:O (no awakenings)

hmm.. I just noticed my cpu and video card have very similar model numbers. :)

I'm also getting frequent CTD. Worked great before latest patch and now this. Have they patched the patch yet? Running Win XP on 2.8 Ghz Pentium D with GeForce 8600 GTS video card and 3 Gb ram.

I as well am getting intermittent crashing to the desktop... I am running Windows 7 64bit on an intel i5 750, gforce 9800 gtx with 4 gigs of ram. I am really hoping for an expedient fix as I am losing patience.

I can't believe that there has still been no fix to the obviously glaring issues that so many people are having regarding patch 1.03. I can't even play origins or awakening now. At this point I will never buy another game from Bioware. This is an appalling lack of response.

I've been all through these forums trying every trick that I have seen and none of them have worked. If I delete everything and go back to origins without the 1.03 patch it plays perfectly at max settings. Now if I enter any fight, the game crashes to desktop every time.

I have had more than enough

I've read a lot of game crashes for lots of players since 1.03 however my only issue so far has been entirely UNPLAYABLE stuttering and fps intermittent lag which I have never come into contact with before.

Prior to 1.02 I played with all settings on high, 1920x1080 resolution and 2x AA with rare to no graphical lag. Now even with all settings on low I still get the lag and stuttering. I'd like to know if anyone's experiencing these problems as well.

System Specs:

- AMD Phenom™ 9500 Quad-Core Processor 2202 MHz (TLB disabled)
- RAM 5.99 GB
- NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT VRAM 512GB (driver 196.21)
- Windows 7 Home Premium, DirectX 11

We have the exact same machine Valsung! Except for my GTS 250 which performs about the same as the 9800 anyway. And exactly the same as you, I've had absolutely no crashes, but the stutter/lag is unbearable. I wonder if it has something to do with Phenoms? Maybe only the Intels or other processors are experiencing the crashes? Can anyone clarify?

Anyway, I've completely lost myself now in Assassin Creed 2, which is a lot more bang for my buck, as it both looks and runs better than DA ever will, and its nothing but a straight up port. Seriously, Bioware, you could learn something from Ubisoft. Even the DRM doesn't bother me as long as the game isn't a chore to play for any period of time.

yeah, judging based on the issues with loading times for Phenom's in the past and a few other people mentioning the insane graphics lag this patch had the processor I wouldn't be surprised. Early quad core architecture is probably pretty lame and who knows if DAO is really optimized for it.

I would be fine with a reversion to 1.02 since that was all fine and dandy heh, but I want to finish awakening as well! I though patches were supposed to fix more things than break >:(

Are Bioware/EA going to do a hotfix for 1.03? Seems they abanndoned the whole thing?

They said they are collecting information and expanding their bug database. They haven't abandoned it. Since they don't know what all of the causes are for the crashing and increasing load times (presumably they know how they broke Stealing), it will take a while to identify the problem before a fix can be tested properly. It will likely take some time to come out with a patch that fixes anything substantial. Using RTO as a barometer for how fast Bioware can move in these situations, I wouldn't expect a quality update in the immediate future.

Just an update on my issue of stuttering and graphics lag. I did a full reinstall and only after everything was installed, installed my mods/dlc and everything appears to be running admirably better. The frequency of the intermittent lag seems to be reduced or perhaps entirely gone (I haven't had enough time to test it out, only had 30 minutes free)

So take it with a grain of salt, I'll have more time to test if it really worked later tonight, but for the moment it seems resolved.

EDIT: LAG/STUTTERING BACK IN FULL FORCE, THIS TIME ACCOMPANIED WITH CRASHES TO DESKTOP. LOVELY!

Edit 2: Loading screen lag is back it seems as well on top of all the other issues.

Incredibly poorly tested patch. Quite obscene really. I'd like to hear an update on the current progress in resolving this issue, or perhaps a hotfix/reversion ASAP.

for those of you with intel boards

http://downloadcente...090&FamilyId=40

installing the latest chip-set drivers for your motherboard and processor would be a nice start since the ones that usually come on the cd etc and or with windows are generally generic and out of date.

install latest video card and audio card drivers

install all windows updates (this one pretty much made all my issues with 1.03 patch issue go away) especially the .net framework

There is some sort of anti-copying gimmick on the DVD (not a CD) that sometimes seems to confound various optical drives' abilities to read the contents.  There are a variety of work-arounds, of which the very simplest is to find a friend or relative with an external DVD drive you can borrow.

Next simplest, if you have two PCs at home you can connect, is try using the other PC's DVD drive across the Cat5 networking (ethernet) connections.  That's what I had to do.

A few people have had some success copying the DVDs into a folder on their hard drive, and running the install from there.  There are several message threads about it that the search will find by using the keyword "Data" (no quotes when you type that in).

I have seen more complaints from people with dual/quad core windows 7 pcs. Also those with 64 bits. I
have a 4 yr old single core 32 bit pc with windows XP and 3gig of ram. I have an Nvidia GeForce 7900GTX,650MHZ,
512 MB, GDDR3 1.6G PCI-Express and I haven't had any trouble with the 1.03 patch except a little stuttering when I first start the game, and that clears up quickly. I haven't had any crashes or slow fps problems at all. Go figure...
Anyone with an older Win XP experiencing trouble?
