Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward; the greatest story ever told in a video game!

This game is a visual novel game in which you read and solve puzzles with graphic/sound compnent. Most importanly, this game IMO has the GREASTEST MATURE STORYTELLING ever in all video game history. There are no other games that even come remotely close to the level of smartness and cunning storytelling of Zero Escape. This game impressed me much more than what Planescape:Torment did in terms of story.
Zero:Escape is the second game of a trilogy. It could also make an interesting case of comparison with Mass Effect trilogy as to how it will retain plot integrity in the sequel.
Check out the video review of Zero Escape. Even if you don't own the console, given the nature of the game, watchign a LP or a walkthough will be as pleasant experience as playing it directly, and that' what I did too. I should make a remark that this is only LP I've watched without commentary, because I didn't want any interuption with the storytelling by LPers since the game's story is unfathomably good.

Is it free?
Edit: Gave it another chance (I kinda judge a game the first five minutes) and it looks kinda neat, but I don't see myself spending 1-2 hours in a room regardless of the story. But it looks like a solid puzzle game for thost that enjoy that genre.

It's kind of hard to keep obscure game topics alive when you're not participating in your own thread. You pretty much just left it alone.IntoTheDarkness wrote...
Since my last thread about 999, Zero Escape's original game, attracted less than 10 people's attention before it died, I figured I should put a bit of personal opinion when starting 999's sequel thread.

Us 3DS owners are getting so spoiled with so many great games I don't even have time to play

For me, 999 had a much better story than VLR, for spoilerish reasons.

And some of the voices (while technically well done, I can't deny that) will make you wish you were deaf.
I'm looking at you, Quark. And you, Zero III.

Yeah there's nothing that ridiculous in 999. Is that a robot monk?Shepenwepet wrote...

That picture was from a very out-of-character moment for him. He was actually my favorite character in the game.

Its focus is the novel part and the majority of time you spend will be on reading texts and making decisions rather than solving puzzles. Puzzles are there just to strengthen plots and give a break from reading.
And this game is mature. I think early teens will have problems with puzzles and plot complexity, to compare to adventure books you've read.
I don't like puzzle games but this game is worth playing for anyone who cares about good story in games, IMO. My disappointent with ME 3 got washed away while playing this game, as I realized that no matter how well RPG writers do, I won't see any stories like this, so I should just relex and be less critical of stories in RPG genre.

I thought with 999 being super-plot heavy and complex, its plot discussion can keep the thread alive, which was not the case....

If your evaluation is coming from the mood of those two games, the
writer Kotaro Uchikoshi revealed in an interview that his boss forced
him to write lighter story to attract more audience in Zero Escape.
Despite its less gory and more humourous(remember
I too prefered 999 until I actually finished Zero Escape because ZE had more 'fantastical' feeling about it that I didn't
enjoy much, but in the end the plot complexity, integrity, imagination,
storytelling just blew my mind to rank ZE the best game in terms of
story.

So I just read that the EU version does not include English VO (which is supposed to be top-notch).Were I to import the game from the US would it be region locked and not work?
[EDIT] Nevermind. Damn stupid 3DS lock.
English VA are top notch, indeed.
I should confess I've never played any Japanese game in which I prefered English voice-overs to the original.

I honestly would have preferred the game without voice acting. I read faster than they talk, and in games like this, I want answers as fast as I can get them. I tend to cut them off mid-sentence every time.

IMO Zero did the best job in VA, I really liked him.
He is damn anoying but isn't that the point?

That's it right there. Add to that the fact that 999 wrapped up quite nicely, VLR ends as it's just starting. I just felt rather cheated out of an ending.
Oh, and re: Zero III, it's clear the VO had a ball with the character, and I agree it was one of the better done voices in the game, I just couldn't stand it. A bit too over the top.
Although calling K "Potassium" made me giggle.

you could share the titles, at least.
I can't possibly imagine there could be any VN that is better than ZE in terms of story.

that made me laugh too.
and I think the endings established nice connections to the third game since this is planned as trilogy. It certainly didn't feel like ME2 where every plot point was irrelevant by the time of ME3 for me.
BTW, was K in that picture K-K or K-A? that was out of character for either Ks, thought I can imagine K-A doing that.

Heh. I don't remember, I beat the game last October so the details are a bit fuzzy.
I know that before Volume 3 releases I'm going to have a marathon of the first two to have the plot fresh in my mind. I played through 999 a few days before VLR, and it certainly helped me pick up on little clues. I knew who one of the characters really was quite early on. It was like I was being beaten over the head with it.
