So, we know that a Reaper would hang out in the edges of our galaxy and would peek to see what's going on in our corner of space and determine whether or not it was time to start the harvest/cycle.

We know the Citadel has a archives area that has records/holograms depicting key events in the last cycle (e.g. the Asari discovering the Citadel, Krogan Rebellion, Morning War, First Contact war, etc).

We also know that the Citadel was the home of the Catalyst; i.e. the collective conscious of the Reapers.

Fair to say that this was the specific mechanism that triggered the start of a cycle?  The Repear would download data from the Citadel, analyze it and decide whether ot hit snooze or rise and shine?

Sorry if someone already came to this conclusion and that i'm about 3 months late to the party.Posted Image

I never thought about it, but it may be related.

Great thought, OP

Not sure about this.  Didn't Vigil theorise that the Reapers seized The Citadel in order to gain access to the civilisation's data?

@OP The events you stated are in the current cycle, not the last.
@CaptianZaysh Yeah, I think Vigil mentioned it.

It could be much easier that that. They could simply have the mass relays transmit information about their activity. Once a certain level and hence amount of space travel is reached, they will sent a secret signal to the one they left behind which will then start the cycle.

I don't think we ever came across anything definite as to what really triggers the cycle.

I know.  That's my point.  The Repear hanging out on the edge of the Milky Way will connect to the Citadel and access information that is archived to see where things stand for the current cycle.

3:58.

Here's my take:

It  didn't say the Reapers have to "be there" to access this data, per se.  To me, that's how they knew how to attack once they got in.  Remember in ME3, they came in through the Batarian system yet they were very efficient in going to where advanced organic civilations have settled in this cycle, right? The Citadel was just like taking a interstate highway; taking the most direct, efficient route.   Shepard basically closed that highway and they looked at Google Maps and decided to take Route B.  Am I making any sense?

How else would they know?  They're in dark space.  As Vigil said, positioned where no one could accidentally discover them.

Essentially, the Reapers had a galatic PRISM program. Posted Image

This is possible, too.  But the Citadel is also the hub for the relays, so it would seem more efficient to get data from the hub versus individual datapoints.

Talking, about the Citadel, archives, I was rather...distracted by the fact that regardless of age, armor and equipment is portrayed as being always the same, I would have expected that the designer's had created unique assets for these important scenes.

Then Again, Citadel is almost worthless, narrative speaking.

The Citadel was fan service. Period. It was a hell of a lot of fun though and one of the main reasons why I'm looking forward to another playthru one day.

That being said, yeah, it's funny that the aesthetics didn't change much, but then look at Star Wars KOTR compared to the movies set a 1000 years from the game. LOL. Once you get flying cars, you're pretty much...done.

Accessing the data might be more efficient once you are there, but remember: it is the heart of galactic civilization, galactic government resides there + it controls the mass relays. If the mass relays transmit directly to the one they left vs each other, data analysis might be more demanding, but you risk no exposure.
