I actually think that's a valid point. It's obviously nothing dealbreaking, but I think any well-developed rogue in the party should be fine for opening chests.
I'd prefer that class specific content take a similar form to the origins of DA:O, and focus on story and character. If class-specific resources or rewards are opened through those kinds of channels, then I think it makes more sense.

I'd actually like it if you are playing as a mage/warrior and you click on a locked chest then the rogue in your party will automatically go and open the chest without you having to select them everytime.
this i can get behind having to micro it was a pain.

Just one? you should be surrounded by them each one potentially containing the most powerful weapon in the gameMaria Caliban wrote...
There should be a locked chest that only appears at the beginning if the PC is a mage or fighter.
Every chance the PC is away from their party, a locked chest just sits there, taunting you

It would be kind of interesting to find a chest or box that is chained shut and only a warrior's strength can open it.
Or for a mage...a box that requires a spell to open, like that one door in the DAO mage origin. It doesn't really need to be password protected or anything, but a required specific spell or type of spell to open would work.

Did you read my post ? I didn't say that locked chests shouldn't be a bonus for rogues, I said there shouldn't be locked chests before you actually get to recruit a rogue. That's common sense. If the only rogue available is... yourself, oh too bad you're not one. Then that's kind of lame. Do put locked chests everywhere for rogues to open. Just not before you have the opportunity to have a rogue. Other than the rogue that you're not.

And the kicker? You return to these chests later in the game with your new party rogue, eager to behold the gleam of mysterious riches...you open them with baited breath...and they're empty.

It's a particularly annoying form of niche protection. And unnecessary nowadays, since rogues are very much effective combatants.

That too, I couldn't help but feel I was wasting skill points (attribute points in the case of DA2) just to satisfy my completionist urge to open every locked chest. The incentive for bringing a rogue along should be that they're a rogue dammit! Not that they have ancient secret knowledge about picking (unimportant) locks. That's hardly cool.

I don't care so much about chests, unless something cool's in it, but It bugged me immeasurably that I couldn't get all codex entries outside the Controls section if I wasn't a mage in DAO, because there's one Codex entry which is only available in the mage origin. That there are another two a dwarf can't get was another annoyance but minor.

Oh gawd yeah, that was really annoying. i think I ended up playing that with both of em in my party untill she could do it.
I think every rogue should at least start off with decent opening chests ability. Didn't mind Ostagar so much though because origins was all about only being able to do certain things if you had certain abilities ect. It was annoying in DA2 though.
