Only if he makes that face. A lot. At the worst times.

I love this thread :D.

I would prefer a LI that didn't turn into a brooding mess. Although it worked for Fenris, I still want someone with a somewhat cheerier outlook. Therefore, I am not on the Cullen bandwagon because I can only imagine the brooding he could pull off.

Heh it's amusing to think that David Gaider wrote Alistair and Fenris. So different! Actually, now that I write that, Alistair is the type to dwell on things but also keep them inside, as Shale says, "It also likes to hide its many weaknesses behind a veil of jocularity." So, I think Fenris is just more open with his brooding.

At any rate... I wouldn't mind a Nathaniel Howe kinda guy. /sigh He's dreamy. He's also broody in his own way, so I guess we can tell the type I'm into >.>.

I liked Alistair's shyness but his continual expressions of grief over Duncan got old after a couple playthroughs. I liked the way Nathaniel warmed up to the Warden and Anders' lightheartedness in Awakening. I'd like to see a snarky, male human version of Shale but not necessarily as a LI. Varric was tremendous fun to run around Kirkwall with but I think part of the reason he was was that he was unavailable as a LI. The romanceable version of Anders was so over-the-top I play his romance just for entertainment. The hopelessly emotionally damaged Fenris is caricature-like in its own way and I enjoy that as well. The jealousy banter between a previously romanced Fenris and Anders, romanced or not and with or without Isabela, is tremendous. I like the way Varric feels the need to offer some friendly advice - briefly - ever so much better than Wynne's long-winded "mother's talk."

The point I've been laboring up to is that for me, at least, the point of a LI is to add to the entertainment value of the game. I'll be happy if Bioware can come up with a male LI with one or two interesting quirks that do this. If he's easy on the eyes it'll be a bonus.

I *knew* you were going to say Nathaniel!

Personally, I'm allergic to broody (gender doesn't really matter). I like sarcasm - even dark sarcasm or snark - but that whole intense, angsty thing kinda makes me look for the "Get over yourself" dialogue options. Diff'rent strokes.

Any LI is going to have issues that need to be overcome, even if they're trivial. If the entire romance consists of "Hey, you aren't bad. Wanna knock boots?"/"Sure." that isn't very interesting. Why bother? I mean, I don't want the romances to be like climbing Mt. Doom, but there has to be some sense of accomplishment. But the "emotionally unavailalbe LI" thing might have been done too much in the past and I'm ready for something else. Maybe a love triangle that needs to be narrowed down? We haven't seen that one in a while. Or the LI could just be oblivious. That works for cheerful, low-angst people.

Anyway, epic WoT when I'm supposed to be working.

Edit: Anyway, you already know who I want to see as a LI in the next game. One of them is Cullen (who will probably push my tolerance for angst, but I still think he's interesting). The other one is Galyan. I'd definitely figure him for a light-hearted, low-stress LI, but if the devs wanted him in, I'm sure they could figure out a few issues for him. Like being hung up on Cassandra or oblivious to the PC...

;)Back to work, you.....

The emotionally oblivious LI sound like it might be fun.  Are you talking the kind that needs a few subtle hints  - like getting hit over the head with a 2x4?  Or are you talking about classic unrequited romance - arguably, like Varric.  There are plenty of options out there.  I wonder what different possible outcomes would be like to write, for instance choosing to have a LI move in or not without having it already scripted?  Or having an in-party rival for the LI's devotion?

^^ Heh, I answered you in the edit. I think a romance there could start out as unrequited interest on the PC's part, but he'd better come around eventually if he knew what was good for him!

Edit: Oooh, I hadn't thought of a LI who was dense as an underbaked brownie! I have no idea how the writers could pull it off without making it feel contrived (it's bad form to tell the player what the protagonist is feeling), but I'm sure it could be managed. It might be a lot of fun.

Broody, Moody, Chasty. And dead wife/husband (lover) mentioned in every conversation as a bonus.
Really, can my PC have someone intelligent, mature, adult and manly LI, please? Just once...

Someone here said that they'd like someone shy, and I actually think that sounds awesome. A really shy sort of male character would be adorable, sort of a male Merrill but less socially awkward.

Barring that, I really want Dorian from the leaked survey character sketches. Please be real, Dorian ;_;

Ha!

They could always export Garrus to DAI and make Shepard the protagonist. I'd go for it.

Then again, the game will be too short.

"Joker, introduce the dragon to our main gun and get us out of here! I've got a really hot dancing date at the Citadel."

In all seriousness, I've yet to see a bad male mage romance. Mages are awesome.

^The perfection of Garrus cannot be replicated. Varric has the closest chance, I suppose, since (like Garrus) he originated as an unromanceable companion & thus allowed for the dynamic of Subordinate>Friend>Lover...but seeing as our DAI protag is not Hawke, that point is moot.

I want an older man (Haytham Kenway) who knows what he's doing (Haytham Kenway) and has a vicious wit (Haytham Kenway) and doesn't pander to the protagonist. Also, not having a dead beloved wife would be a major plus as I AM SO SICK of this trope. Also, Adrian Hough could use more work so just hire him as the VA.

I like the idea of an older, sarcastic man.  That sounds like it would be a blast.  There is a problem with creating an older character starting off at level 1 because what was he doing before but that could be a great backstory.  Maybe he was a smith or shopkeeper until the Qunari razed his villiage or a non-titled relative of a noble who was ousted in scandal.

The best option, in my opinion, would be like one of the following:

1. Varric - The man is made of awesome, and always makes me smile. He's fun, he's a badass, and he doesn't stand around whining all the time.

2. A 'hardened' Alistair type - I loved Alistair, especially after he was toughened up a bit. He was confident, but not overly cocky, funny, and hot. I'm in the middle of a replay where I actually did the threesome with him and Isabela. His reaction was both cute and hilarious. Another Alistair type would be great, minus the whole "woe is me, I'm a bastard" backstory. Alistair really is the best romance option BioWare has ever given us, with the best possible ending (so far, and hopefully they won't hose the Alistair/Warden relationship in DA:I).

3. A man like Fenris minus his psychotic obsession with mages. Really, the scene where he and Hawke finally go at it was beyond hot, and as a romance, I really liked it even with all of his 'damage'. But by the end of the game, I wanted to put my fist through his face every time he said anything about magic. Either that or chain him to Anders until the two of them either killed each other or stopped being insane.

4. Canderous Ordo. 'Nuff said.

5. Sten, or some other character that is huge and strong to the point where the only true hope my character has of besting him is either downing potions like water or stripping him of his armor before we battle. Then let us win him over the way the Warden did with Sten and follow through with a possible romance. Just don't give him horns...the Arishok was kinda hot, but those horns freaked me out.

6. Thane, without the "I'm dying but there may be hope, oh haha! No hope, I'm dead!" crap. The quiet, badass assassin gets me every time and usually provides good balance to my characters.

7. Speaking of assassins...an Ezio type. *drools* I don't even care if he's a chauvinist. In fact, that would be more fun. Instead of a romance built on having to 'fix' whatever emotionally damaged guy our female characters hook up with, let us show him that women can be as badass as he is and let the relationship be built from that. Much like I had hoped, in the beginning, it would be with Sten (I loved the "Sten, are you flirting with me?" dialogue!).

^^ This, only I feel that Alistair was an intelligent and manly option (only if he was toughened up after the incident with his wretched sister). When he was being immature, like when he tried to get Wynne to take care of his ouchies or mend his socks, I took it as humor rather than signs of true immaturity (plus he never had a mother figure and threw that position to Wynne, understandably). The man stepped up to the plate when he got the throne, which pleased me greatly. Other than Alistair, though, most romance options in any RPG have been subpar for one reason or other.

Someone that my character doesn't have to constantly coddle and treat with kid gloves. I want a male LI that wants to be my character's protector. A strong male LI. I liked the DA2 Romances but I got a little tired of always having to be the strong one in the relationship. I felt like I was being a psychologist half the time.
