Games with stats. levels and a fake sense of progression are so early 90...

contemporary rpgs are all about the Role playing part. which means acting in characers not using some fake statistic charts that make no sense in order for you feel more powerful.

All rpgs that support the levelup system has ballance issues. they are hard and first and super easy at the ending.
And more important they make no sense. which means they break immersion.

I was going to respond to the post above, but because you bash almost every game out there.
Not sure I need to.

My main problem with this analysis is that there's an implicit assumption that independent Bioware thought of itself as a maker of niche RPG product, rather than the mass-appeal cinematic stuff they do now. My impression is that Bio has always been headed in the interactive movie direction; they went cinematic as far and as fast as their technology would take them. And the D&D and Star Wars licenses are as mass-market as you get in those genres.

Exactly.  Bioware was niche because it was a start-up.  So it was not just the tech that held them back but the CAPITAL ie money.  If they were interested in remaining a niche RPG product they never would have accepted Elevation Partners or EA money.  They allowed themselves to be bought out because they wanted to do bigger projects and so they needed money in order to do those projects.

That is how business works.  You start off small and for most people, your goal is to develop a product that eventually attracts the big money.

Whether BW wanted to chase the "cinematic" buck or not, it's pretty likely that they sold out to Elevation Partners, instead of the likes of EA who were after them at the time, because there was an understanding of a "hands-off" policy of creative independence. Then of course John Riccitiello hopped back on the EA train, pocketing a nice $400 million for delivering BW to EA in the process. BW were the victims at that point, but looks like Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk developed a mighty Stockholm Syndrome for their "dear friend and mentor", Mr. Riccitiello, soon enough.

right, that's like....your opinion man

I would rather have that than no progression at all UNLESS the game lacks NG+....in which case I am fine with no progression

You are being too kind to Bioware.  In  this day and age it is easy to retain contractual control of your business by simply offerring a non-voting interest in a company or offerring voting interest that is less than 50% while you retain greater than 50% voting interest.  Of course, to do so you likely have to accept less money.

Microsoft is a public company but Bill Gates still retains control.  Why?  Because he ensured that when Microsoft went public he retained a large share of the voting stock.  So if Bioware really gave up creative control, it is because they choose to not because they were somehow tricked into doing so.  This is basic business knowledge.

Bio wasn't completely creatively independent  before EA, what with WotC and LA vetoing stuff since they owned the IPs.

Are they less independent now? If you want to blame EA for stuff Bio games do that you don't like, I guess believing this can make you feel a bit better about them.

What's your point? RPGs are a genre many people like. What do sales numbers have to do with anything?

Sales have little to do with the quality of a game. Look at the CoD series. Modern Warfare 2 was great, it was also the last good CoD. Every CoD game since had just the same old engine, the same terrible graphics, the same monotonous gameplay and the same amount of effort put into it(o,oo). Still the games managed to sell millions upon millions of copies.

Precisely. And for people talking out their rears...

And Witcher 2 was considered a critical success at 1.2 million back in May 2012.

CoD sells more than it deserves, but to say that the witcher is better is stupid.I bought the first witcher on steam sale, played it 30 minutes and haven't touched it since. The gameplay is simply awful. Not to mention the protagonist is just an old man who tries to ba** every female
