One guy and another one have a disease and they decide to do things that they ever wanted. In the end, they have a disagreement and then the disease gets worse for both of them. Then the last of the things was realized, in a matter of perspective, by another person.

Three magicians are always trying to outdo each other, only to have a lot of really bad stuff happen to them and the ones they love, plus one turns out to be a real bad man..especially to himself....

a guy tries to rescue his friends from a Evil Gangster, but end captured by him. they manage to defeat the gangster and go to a new adventure. after that they split ways but then reunite themselves again. after reuniting they go to defeat an old guy. the good guys almost are defeated, only to be aided by the local population. the old guy is defeated and they celebrate

You know that the boy in the movie, Jim Graham, (Edit - played by Christian Bale) is actually the author J.G. Ballard?
It's what he describes as a 'selfbiographical novel'. Which means that it's a novel and fiction, but that everything that happens in it, has also actually happened and been experienced by himself.

Spielberg has actually changed the story somewhat, in the movie, to align it with 'family values' and happy ending. So for instance, in the novel his break from his parents is permament. He doesn't want to be reunited, and after all those long years of survival, he has no longer anything in common with them. J.G.B. mental scars are actually pretty obvious in everything he has written. It's his trademark, you could say.
