A guy is a soldier, fighting in a doomed war for intangible resources. He is mortally wounded, and as he slowly expires, has a (Possibly) drug-induced hallucination about having a family decades later. He simultaneously hallucinates that he was divorced and his son was killed, and that he is dating a sexy brunette who he believes to be a servant of Satan. His only solace is his relationship with his doctor, where he gleans much needed perspective. It is his pure, unconditional love for his son that finally redeems him.

I know it's not the answer, but 127 Hours comes to mind in an odd way

I should be better at these descriptions as I grew up with my mum's interesting movie descriptions which normally involved 'it's got that guy from that TV show' - it didn't and she always confused me.

Hint: MacCauley Culkin
Even the hint is obscure I only know cause I was surprised at time he was in it. If it's what I think it is I described it earlier but yours is much better - I went with a soldier dies in a war. Oh and Jacobs Ladder, been reminded of it now it's being remade.
