Hm, I thought I read somewhere that in Thedas a vampire would basically be a person/corpse possessed by a hunger demon.

Could have made it up in my head, however.

Yeah, if I recall correctly there was some piece of lore in Dragon Age: Origins that heavily implied the existence of peculiar Hunger Demon Abominations that basically resembled vampires. That actually confirms their existence, but with a different origin or lore supporting them. The rest (fangs, sun weakness, fancy black clothes and general evilness) could basically stay the same and they will be Vampires even if they actually are "hunger demons".

Joss Whedon made Vampires soulless corpses possessed by demons in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, after all, so it's not like it has never been done before.

Besides, vampires have been done to death the last few years, so unless they come up with some idea that is way far away from the generic vampire stuff, it won't work. I suppose they could have a demon that is based on vampires, maybe.

That's not true. What has really been done to death is the Urban Fantasy genre in Young Adult novels and teen movies because of Twilight. Mostly modern vampires, yeah, but also werewolves and all other kinds of UF trophes.

But old, classic Fantasy Vampires? Or in general, videogames vampires? Other than Skyirm I can't really think of another game that used vampires in a fantasy setting in the last ten years or so.

I always considered Reavers to be the DA equivalent of vampires.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. The second one is coming soon as well where we will actually be playing as Dracula himself.

I know the feeling...
Sadly I suspect that the first vampire game we're going to be seeing will be the World of Darkness MMO by CCP - and I'd guess even that is at least two years away from now.

That was my take on it as well, if they exist they'd be likely to be some kind of Hunger Abominations - since DA doesn't have true undead.

D'oh!

I loved so much the first one, how could I forgot that? Anyway, yeah, that's exactly my point: old school, badass Fantasy Vampires. Absolutely perfect.

I don't dig the modern casual fantasy creatures. Something I like about Dragon's Dogma is going a bit out of the current norm and using chimeras and similar creatures rather than the same bag of vampires and werewolves that everyone else have.

Depends if you are referring to vampires as in the Dracula kind.....

Dragon Age already has its vampires in the form of demons who prey upon others beyond the fade.

I think both blood mages and some types of demons can usefully make a few nods at vampireness without having actual vampires.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind vampires like they were done by Bram Stoker and such. And there are some animes/mangas with vampires that are very well done.

Unfortunately the modern take on vampires (and werewolves for that matter) is so widespread now that it's sort of made me dislike them in general at the moment.

This is just my opinion, of course.

Hunger demons are Thedas vampires, that's enough. Not every goddam fantasy series needs fricken vampires.

I'm okay with Vampires in Thedas being Hunger Demons, they can even restrain from calling them "Vampires" at all for what it's worth.

But why not add a proper Coven of "Hunger Abominations"? Threating them with BioWare's own spin on everything that's related to proper pop culture Vampires, from their powers to their thirst to their fancy clothes?

I think that's a concept with a lot of potential.

Pretty much. It's even the description for a 'vampire' in the codex referencing a hunger demon as well.

So you drink/eat blood. Big fracking deal. I (and millions of people in Asia) do too.

So long as they had a believable in-game explanation for their existence and were actually vicious conniving monsters and not sparkly emo pretty boys, then sure.

But I also want my ninja assassin companion.

I was referencing Twilight and its 'vampires'.

I just meant that the 'modern' version of vampires (a.k.a. the extremely good-looking, non-threatening, ridiculous kind) does not appeal to me.
