Okay, so after ME3 broke my heart last year I've finally decided to - with the help of the MEHEM - start over from scratch and play this series over again, "The Right Way".

Anyone who knows me even a little should know that means FemShepxLiara, Sniper Rifles, and Paragonning all up in here, yo. Seems simple, right? There's just one downside.

I did Infiltrator the first time around, followed by a max-difficulty Adept (DESTROYER OF WORLDS) and now I'm wondering what class to play.

Infiltrator again, for Sniping and fun Cloak antics? Another Adept because Singularity rocks the big one? What about a Vanguard? Oh, but Biotic Charge and shotgun is so crass - and Soldiers don't have any Biotics at all!

Ultimately I play this game for the story, so I'll ask you lot;
What Class do you think suits Shepard the most, character wise?

(If you have an argument for more than one Class, at least try to list them in ascending order!)

I'm not going to necro an older thread - I'm trying to start a discussion, not read off a checklist.

Actually looking at that thread I think some of the posters seem a bit... Derpy. Shepard is already a soldier, being a Soldier class doesn't actually change that. It's not like Adept-Shepard or Engineer-Shepard never went through military training.

I really enjoy a Vanguard Shepard. The awesome power of an Adept and the in your face play style of a soldier feels very fitting to me.

I would go Sentinel. You have potent biotics as well as tech. Warp and Overload help to drain all defense types, setting up easy kills. I believe they have the same weight capacity as Infiltrators do, so you won't be slowing down at all on power usage.

By now engineer has become my favorite class. Tech explosions for the win. + if you have got supertanky turrets and drones, you hardy ever are attacked. Killing surprisingly seems easier and faster than withe other classes.

If you want the class that fits Shepard most, go with Soldier or Infiltrator.

It's pretty clear that Shepard is assumed to be a soldier as the default option, and it is the class that makes the most sense when taking many gameplay assumptions into account: i.e. always using a soldier's omni-blade to kill Kai Leng, being unable to catch up to Eva Core despite potentially having access to a biotic charge, never using biotics or tech talents in cutscenes outside of recent DLC, having many characters comment on his combat ability but very few on his technical prowess or biotic ability, etc. I don't like Soldiers, though, and Infiltrators are better at combat and more fun to play.

Taking recent DLC into account, Engineer Shepards get a few nods including an exclusive Paragon interrupt in Omega and at least one explicit mention of Engineer!Shepard's class in Citadel.

Biotic Shepards are kinda shafted on the game acknowledging you are a powerful biotic outside of actual shooting matches (you get maybe one or two nods across the trilogy), but biotics are fun and one of the exclusive building blocks of the ME Universe. It's just a shame that Adepts don't get any exclusive class power (Singularity is supposed to be this, but Liara has it in ME3 and she's potentially your only biotic squadmate.)

I feel all classes fit all Shepards equally.  Play whichever class you like the most or the one you want to experience.

For me personally, soldier never gets old.  Adept is a lot of fun and while I like vanguard, its not the same as it was in 2.  Infiltrator is also enjoyable though not exactly to my taste; I personally have never been all that into engineer or sentinel.

So pick what you like and play it.

I agree, in particular you think the asari - and probably Javik, in ME3 - would be more keen to make note of Shepard's exceptional biotics (as Kaidan describes them).

Also true, though I must admit it was very hilarious to stunlock Saren's Beast-form by alternating between Shepard and Liara's Singularities, in the first game.

I stand by what I said in the days of ME1: IMHO, Adept, engineer and sentinel are too specialised in support to be out forward for First Human Spectre (they can't even use an assault rifle!). Soldier is too generic and common (if you had to pick one, would you pick the soldier or the soldier with magical powers?), and infiltrator used to be too specialised in long-range combat (but the addition of tactical cloak changed that)... Thus, I'd say vanguard or infiltrator

If you haven't played a Vanguard, you should definitely try that one out. I prefer biotic powers to pure charge/shotgun shenanigans, so I took Slam as a bonus power to couple with pull. Charge + gunplay is great for those with shields, though.

I also really enjoyed Sentinel with Defense Matrix for nigh invulnerability (when coupled with Tech Armor). Being able to storm rush enemy lines with minimal cover/dodging was a nice chance of pace after two straight play throughs of cover + biotic bombs.

Vanguard is a bit of a hybrid of the two, which is why I would recommend that one first. Biotic Charge is the most unique skill in the entire game, and you can still hang onto your biotic god combos.

My favorite play throughs have been Adept > Vanguard > Infiltrator > Sentinel > All others.

This is what I love about the Vanguard too. I get my favored powers from the adept class, but I get close-quarters lethality which is always satisfying.

Another huge plus is that in ME1, you may not have assault rifle capability, but once you get your shotgun upgraded, it more than makes up for it. I just take Ashley, Garrus or Wrex along for a lot of missions to get someone who can do proper rapid fire support.

Infiltrator is the most powerful class that makes sense for Shepard's story.

Vanguard is equally powerful but Vanguard would never have failed to catch Dr. Eva or lost to Kai Leng.

In fact I had to retcon my Shepard from Vanguard into Infiltrator because I can't stand those cutscenes otherwise.

Heh. Infiltrators wouldn't have lost to Kai Leng, either. Thessia becomes hilarious when you can take his shields out in a single shot from your sniper rifle with disruptor ammo. The whole fight is basically you taking cover from the gunship, cloak when it retreats, fire once, take cover from gunship.

I play Infiltrator but, instead of a Sniper Rifle, I use a Shotgun.

Infiltrator can be killed. By anything, really. Vanguard cannot.

Also, Kai Leng has Shield Boost. If you play multiplayer, you know what that means.

Ultimately this is what I went for. Except I have a Sniper Rifle AND a Shotgun. It's working great so far.

Unfortunately, I'm one of those people who prefer the Soldier class. Being able to access the Assault Rifle (my favourite weapon) and dealing with combat quickly is my style.

You can have the assault rifle on any class in all three games. Granted, though, it requires unlocking as a bonus talent first in ME1 and playing about a third of the game first in ME2.

I'd say Shepard is supposed to be the Solider class.
However, I always play as a biotic class, Adept for Paragon Shep, Vanguard for Renegade.
