Alright, just over a year ago I finished Origins for the first time. I played as a female mage, romanced Alistair, put him on the throne and then he ended the romance. Afterwards, my Warden killed the Archdemon and died.
Recently I've been working on constructing a nearly identicle play through of the same Warden with the same exact storyline. However, when it came time to kill the Archdemon, the chat came up between Alistair and the Warden, just as it had before. But this time, instead of my Warden killing the Archdemon, Alistair raced off and killed it himself.
I have no idea what happened. I haven't been able to find any help articles anywhere, but I'm guessing that maybe I just chose the wrong dialogue options? Or did I do something along the way that made it so no matter what he will sacrifice himself?
Any help would be extremely welcome. I would rather not have to start from the beginning of the seige on Denerim just to leave him behind to keep him from dying.

I understand this happens if you have a female warden who romances Alistair and brings him to the final battle.
To make the ultimate sacrifice leave Alistair behind and take different team-mates

Yeah, I read that too. I tried to play the final battle over again, and when Alistair talked to the Warden I chose completely different chat options, but he still made the sacrifice. I'm just confused, because by this point in the game his approval is at "friendly" rather than "loved", just as it was in my original play through where my warden make the sacrifice. I'm guessing I did something differently without realizing, so I'll just have to leave him behind for the final battle.

If he doesn't sleep with Morrigan and he is there when the Archdemon is killed, he will always make the Ultimate Sacrifice. If you want him to live, then he either needs to sleep with Morrigan or get left behind at the gate to Denerim.
