I am in need of help.  I am trying to play Neverwinter Nights 2 with a friend of mine (something I assumed would be an easy process), and I can't seem to get it to work.

This is what I've done:
I downloaded the client extension.
I registered my IP address at nwnlist.com.
I made a port exception in my firewall at my router website.
I started a game in multiplayer in NWN2 using the NWN2 loader in the CE folder.
My friend cannot directly connect (server timeout error).

Other thoughts:
This fails to work even when I disable my firewall.
I don't know if I need my computer IP or router IP (I've only tried comp IP).
My friend and I can both connect and play in PW servers (ruling out certain connection issues).
I emailed nwnlist.com requesting information or advice (no response).

If anyone can offer help or advice, it will justify my friend's purchase, and I will be eternally grateful.
Thank you.

Help? No I cannot sorry. I can only say that I have experienced something similar.

I had a group going and able to connect in much the same way as you describe using much the same initial set up methodology.

Without changing any settings after one game the group were not able to connect at the next with the same error message.

The only thing that changed was a Norton update ... do you ave Norton.

I have asked Norton if it is likely to be the update but they are not a responsive company. On an individual basis.

Good luck and please post here if you do find a fix.

I know this is a real thing; I've seen people do it. I'm still checking this forum a few times a day. Let me know if you know of anything helpful.

I played through the IWD Remake with my brother. He connected directly and we didn't have any problems. Using Teamspeak, I simply told him my computer's internet ip address and he connected. All I did was port forward to my computer. Make sure your friend is putting the correct port. I've played with up to 4 computers connecting remotely using "direct connect" (for a total of 5 PCs). I was never able to see my server listed on the old master server.

Some ISPs block almost all ports, but most likely this isn't the problem.  If it is, just ask them to unblock ports.

This is broken ( and still not fixed after reporting it )

My Never Launcher ( in beta ) actually will be able to add a server to the list ( another thread here )

It won't work though if you cannot direct connect, if you cannot do that, then you probably need to configure your router to port forward and check for anything blocking it ( firewalls or norton )

Having same problem, all ports are open, no firewalls, no anti-virus on. Anyone who connects gets timed out.

If you're on a network with a router between you and the internet, make sure the router forwards all connections on port 5121 and 5122 to the IP address of the PC on which NWN2 is running. Otherwise, requests outside of the network will never reach NWN2.

Unforunately, none of this is working. I have done everything I can think of doing. If anyone thinks they can help, my router is Arris TG862G 7.5.32H.

EDIT: I went to portforwarding.com and used their software to confirm that port 5121 is open.

Its basically your router or computer itself. When you do things as a client, it works because your firewall and router just transparently make it work because your computer initiates it, the issue is only for a server which does not have that luxury. Some routers just are a pain to get working right, and mine I don't even enter it under port forwarding but as a server in another area.

Review the ports here http://nwn2.wikia.co...i/Starting_a_PW ( this is very accurate, but is from before 1.23 was released and the autodownloader was added )

Make sure you can connect from another computer on your lan, it could be your firewall or something else on your computer. But then it could be an issue on the router as well. This can be hard to troubleshoot, especially if you don't have an understanding of how it all works, and since generally your router tends to be completely different than everyone elses.

Then test from another lan ( across the internet which means your friend will need to help ), either via Never Launcher which can ping your server ( via direct connect ), or trying to direct connect to your lan computer.

You might want to go onto #nwn2cr irc ( look in main forums for the sticky )

It would also be helpful for any discussion for you to post your LAN ip address and your public ip address. If you use Never Launcher it has a button under "Update - Configure Game" that allows you to "Get System Specs". This follows the guidelines in the tech support forums. If you leave your server running, i'd be able to possibly ping it if I had the public address.

Unfortunately I don't have the ability to configure your router via my program yet, until I implement that it's always going to be very hard for new people to join the ranks of becoming PW admins.

Establishing a static ip address was the step we were missing years ago. Confirm you have static and not dynamic ip address.

there's no need for that. as long as you don't restart your router you have a temporarily static ip. just search for your router ip and you should be able to find the hosted game. be sure that both udp and tcp protocols are forwarded to the needed ports. you can also try different vpn software like tunngle or hamachi to connect your pcs. within tunngle you can specify a custom port to route the network for private game sessions.
