Chainmail ballgowns might be cool. And long hair sounds great. Like Flemeth's in DA2 but without the horn-like appendages. It looks as though they can do it though, Morrigan's new ballgown looksod, if that's how she appears in-game we know they can do it.

Just because we are heroes and leaders doesn't mean we check our womanhood at the door.

Yeah, this is BSN. Good luck trying to suggest healthy characteristics of normal red-blooded women, like "femininity" etc., are nothing to be ashamed of. =]

Okay, gender ("womanhood") is a social construction... it is something that we have created/fashioned and may choose to adhere to. But a female gamer does not necessarily wish to conform to cultural notions of "womanhood," so just be careful with using such a term, and try not to include "all women" in that statement.

Suggesting that conforming to notions of femininity is "normal" should also be avoided.

:D

'Gender' is not a construct. It is biology. Please don't bring that feminist nonsense into this.

Gender =/= Sex.  Sex is biological, gender is PURELY social.

Another important topic: there's a difference between a competent and beautiful woman who's an accomplished warrior, mage, whatever and a whorish, show-off or futile woman. The first inspires respect and obedience from her troops and people in general. The second one doesn't.

...Er, sorry, what exactly is a "futile woman"?

Do people want Bioware games to embrace masculinity and femininity? Or occupy a grey middle ground?

The answer certainly isn't clear from this thread...

I personally want both male and female characters to have an option to be masculine or feminine.

I would too. The status quo however.. is to allow for players to choose their sex at the character screen and then slap the same psuedo masculine dialogue over both.

I will note however, that I find the above more appealing than when they are slaping masculine on male and feminine on female.

No, I agreed with you the first time! But whatever femininity and masculinity are, they extend beyond what a person looks like or wears.

Options that represent masculinity and feminity available to both sexes.

EDIT: With armor being practical, of course. No gender-specific armor. Note: armor without boobs is not "male armor." It's just armor! Armor with a codpiece... that's male armor lol

If you want writers to make female protagonist to act feminine, I'm agree with. (I'm sure
people will complain about it later, "I want may fem to be tomboyish, you ruined my...")

But about dressing... we talking about an Inquisitor running around in battlefield try not to
get killed and wearing long dress? those thing ain't quite get along well. Not to mention a
ridiculous thing that Isabela wearing, it's not like she prepare to fight, it's like prepare to F.

This thread has gotten really annoying and even offensive. I absolutely hate it when men, or militant feminists try to dictate what women should or should not wear. If you're a man and you don't like looking at women in dresses and makeup, that's fine, don't look or just be sour in the corner over something that doesn't affect you. If you're a militant feminist and would never wear anything revealing or style your hair, then don't. Don't try to tell other people what they should do or wear, or what their IMAGINARY CHARACTER should do or wear. Should you have to dress YOUR character in some kind of chainmail bikini? No! But I shouldn't have to dress mine like a nun, a man, a mailbox, etc... if I don't want to either.

"Oh but a female warrior wouldn't have time to wear makeup, etc...and she would be tired after battling and not want to do anything except wear a snuggie and loaf around" um, maybe YOUR female warrior would be like that, but this is a choice based rpg, I can make whatever character I want. If I want to make a woman like me who wears makeup and feminine clothes (mostly dresses and skirts) and styles her hair every day then I can. If I want to make someone like Isabella who's a straight-up **** then I can. Let me play how I want and leave your preferences to your own game.

"But-but it's not realistic for a fighter to have the time to put on makeup, etc... all the time!" Says who? It takes 5 whole minutes to put on makeup and at least 15 to put on armor (and you need a friend to help you dress). Besides, we're arguing "realism" in a game where characters:

-wear armor but no helmet,
-never use the bathroom,
-never eat,
-females don't shave their legs but never have leg hair
-have sex but never get pregnant,
-in DA2 there are no children, there are no babies in either game,
-the PC has a crazy awesome body both male and female, even if they're a mage or a starving, malnourished refugee, PC doesn't have any imperfections such as acne or female body/facial hair
-there is magic/dragons/demons/etc...
-you don't die instantly from being impaled by a 2 foot wide sword (Arishok) or being shot in the brain with an arrow or roasted by a dragon's fire, etc..
-swords are 12+ inches wide, 3+inches thick, and 6 feet long and are whipped around one handed like they're twigs
-You can romance Fenris as a mage
etc...

Seriously people, stop trying to dictate other's choices. There should be varied options that will make both sides happy.

Nobody is ever against options. It's just that probably bioware will not give the player so many options, and that's when people want their preference to be selected as the one template that will be chosen by bioware for all characters.

And Isabella would probably put a knife in your back if you tried to cover her up... Why do people have such a problem with Isabella? It's not as though every character is presented the way she is... It is consistent with her personality. She's a bloody pirate for petes sake!

Agreed.
Some people have to learn that whatever Jane over in the USA does with her character doesn't affect Jill over in the UK one bit - this isn't an MMO or even a multiplayer game, if someone likes the option to play the seductress/femme fatale it doesn't hurt the stoic/tough battle commander one bit as long as both have the option of what to do in the situation and what to wear.
Bioware did this pretty well with SWTOR, where your outfit can just be modded with whatever armorings, mods and enhancements you want - so you can basically put your whole ensemble together.

But once again you speak merely of appearance. Should characters be able use difference facets of sexuality, masculinity and femininity to achieve their goals? Or should it be largely irrelevant?

For example, quests along the lines of the dark ritual and king of fereldan plot lines of DAO could not really be implemented using the frame work of DA2 where gender and sexual orientation is largely irrelevant.

I actually meant options too, yes - I realize I didn't make that all to clear.
The part I highlighted was meant to refer to the earlier mentioned situation where someone can choose to distract a guard with their charms, or simply knock him over the head like someone else mentioned they would like to do.

I don't see really the offensive on this topic. (Maybe someone really feels offended, then I withdraw my words)
There are opinions, and there are arguments. I like the Isabela's clothes and some people don't, and someone will be agree with my opinion about Isabela, like others will not (For example).

I usually play a rogue that is sultry or that uses her womanly ways to get things done and I like having that option while i would like to have even more was ways to be feminine (long hair, feminish armor/clothing, more dialogue choices like that, etc) I also think being an in-charge not so much caring about looks PC is also important for those who want to create their character that way.
Main point is: options options options, just because you may not like the way someone wants their character to be like doesn't mean you should say it's wrong .

I think no matter what they do they've got their work cut out for them on this one and probably no one is going to like the result. One third of the players will complain because the garb is overly sexualized, one third because it isn't enough and the rest because they don't care for it in general. Glad it's not my job.
