Okay, my eyes are bad, but know they're not that f*cked yet. Duncan reads West Asian, and there is no way in hell Isabella is white. She may not be black (though she always looked as much to me), but "tanned white person"?

C'mon, son. That is the blessing of melanin.

Didn't understand the underlined part but, yeah, I don't want this thread to go into this ''foolish-ass'' direction, I'm just so sick of seeing antiwhite racists spread their poison wherever they go with a free pass and nobody even raises their voice because it's considered completely normal to be racist against whites, it's disgusting, and people who do this knowingly are the scum of the earth.

Well, I don't know if there's a word for it, but the content of it would be the notion that a certain country can (and should) have a central culture, the cultural values of which are deemed absolute within said country. It would also include expecting immigrants to conform to this culture's values.

It's not in any direct way linked to racism.

Im not racist so definitely dont take this the wrong way. I have never seen a black person in Dragon Age. Not even Asians for that matter. Im starting to think they dont exist. The closest we have to blacks are the Chasind. They are usually dark skinned and they remind me more of native Americans than anything else.

Rivain, for starters. Isabela and Duncan (notably, the only two major non-white characters).

But there are tons of places in Thedas whose inhabitants we haven't met yet. The Anderfels, for one notable example. There were humans living on Par Vollen when the Qunari invaded who we haven't seen.

Duncan and Isabela are just really tan white people, (or more akin to spanish decent). As for the ash warriors of Seheron. Something tells me they might be black.

I think one of the writers said that the Rivaini are ethinically black, which would make Isabela black and Duncan mixed. Antivans are the olive complexion/dark hair mediterranean peoples. It's been a while since that post though, a year or more so I could easily be mistaken.

I will say this:

If we had a "person of color" voiced by Samuel L Jackson, it would sell me on the game immediately.

We'd need an extra dialog option for him. At big moments in the game we could select an 'epic' dialogue option that could give us more gems like this.

Wrong, but ok.

They definitely arent black or asian. Isabela is also white as snow in DAO.

How about this:

In Dragon Age society race is so trivialized that that everyone appears to be the same color, even if they are not. No one bothers to draw the distinction.

Why not?

And she isn't, though. That's a combination of the Pearl's poor lighting and DA:O's unsightly skin colour sliders.

Thank you, I knew it was somewhere. Wow it really has been over three years ago? Doesn't seem like it was that long. In anycase, there you go. Lore expert has said that there is ethinic diversity in the dragon age world. He has even gone so far as to say that they are scattered and should be visible, which I think is the main thing a lot of us were asking for. We are just asking that since they are supposed to be visible, if they could resemble real life ethinic features a bit better.

I'd like to see more ethnic diversity as well but I can't help to think that most people that talk about that just have an inferiority complex. Like those black people on youtube deeming certain shows and people racist cause there aren't enough black people

EVERYONE is white as snow in DA so far. The devs say this was because of Eclipse, not because everyone should have been white. Now they are using Frostbite. I know that engine doesn't have such "limits". I watched the Battlefield 4 preview. So if a native Rivani, which apparently is the only place "swarthy skinned" people come from in Thedas, turns up in DA:I, we'll finally get to see what Bioware says they should look like. And where they stand on black people in Thedas.

And they REFUSED to acknowledge the class of Salladhor Saan!  :pinched:

Classiest man on the show!

I would take a Salladhor Saan-esque black character over a ME2 Jacob -esque black character ANY DAY.

Not really.  Lorewise, Duncan and Isabela are Rivaini.  (Perhaps half-Rivaini, based on what I'm hearing now about their backgrounds).  Which means that they're supposed to be the Thedosian equivalent of Latino, I believe.

I agree that Origins doesn't render Duncan too well, and he does tend to look more white than Latino.  But Isabela definitely comes across better.

Her existence, in fact, kind of puts the lie to Bioware's claim that it was due to their engine that they chose not to include more PoC.  But more to the point, it's always been kind of hard for me to buy that argument, given mods like those put out by PineappleTree, as mentioned a page or so back.  If modders can do it, I REALLY can't see Bioware not being able to.

Frankly it seems like they've realized that they showed their ass big-time on this one, and they'd sooner make excuses than just admit it.

Edit:  Check that, Rivaini people are supposed to be black.  It's Antiva that's meant to be the Latin equivalency.

Sometimes I wonder if the reason we don't see more black characters is because Bioware is scared crapless about racism allegations.

I wonder..

Now I'm thinking about that video that was made saying how Lord of the Rings was racist.

They can, it's just a question of how much time they're willing to invest.

Also, you're underestimating modders. Wouldn't be the first time modders did something that the makers of the game claimed to be impossible.

Developers do have a tendency to confuse the meanings of "impossible," "impractical," and "I don't feel like it"

Well there is a thing known as monoculturalism, but I think the racist implications are pretty direct.

I take it back.  Monoculturalism isn't racist per se.  Ethnocentrism is probably closer to the mark as the opposite of multiculturalism.

From a lore standpoint, it makes no sense either. Hawke isn't a native Ferelden. The Hawke family is from Kirkwall, which means his/her roots could be from anywhere.

yes because, just because you are born on one side of an imaginary line (nation boarder) means that you will turn another that nations "color".... *shakes head* if only gentics worked that way,

This is Isabela's headmorph from DAO. Looks like the same character rendered in a different engine, to me.

The lighting in the Pearl messes with your eyes. You're not alone.
