I will say this:

If we had a "person of color" voiced by Samuel L Jackson, it would sell me on the game immediately.

not me, I didn't buy ME2-3 for Matrin Sheen (was pleasently surpized tho) Also C&C games cured me of known actors and actresses of wanting them in video games.... seems they never bring thier A list talent. (well except Sheen he seemed to do a good job)

You just reminded me of that black dude that was talking about how racist Game of Thrones was.

Now I'm thinking about that video that was made saying how Lord of the Rings was racist.

Achem.  It is actually true that Lord of the Rings has some very uncomfortable racist concepts.  Great book, yes, but NOT without its issues.

But more to the point, it's always been kind of hard for me to buy that argument, given mods like those put out by PineappleTree, as mentioned a page or so back. If modders can do it, I REALLY can't see Bioware not being able to.

They can, it's just a question of how much time they're willing to invest.

Also, you're underestimating modders. Wouldn't be the first time modders did something that the makers of the game claimed to be impossible.

I'm not underestimating anyone.  I'm saying that modders make it look more than a bit like Bioware was lying through its teeth in an attempt to save face.

You do realize by asking this question all the white people with unexamined privilege are going to go batcrap crazy and start screaming?

I said it once, but I'll reiterate.

"Ah, you think privilege is your ally? You merely adopted privilege. I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't know I was so privileged until I was already a man, by then I felt no guilt and feel none now."

Now, although your ilk are all bat crap crazy, I'll give you some credit. You chaps are always good for a laugh.

Nice.  A quote that says a whole lot of nothing beyond "I don't know what the hell I'm talking about, so I'll settle for a delusion instead."

Recognizing privilege has nothing to do with feeling guilt.  That's what you're bringing to the discussion, but it doesn't actually have any bearing on reality.  Privilege exists, and it's the whole reason why this thread is full of people thinking that "But we can't have PoCs in the game because it would be lorebreaking!" is the argument to end all arguments and don't realize what a ****ing stupid argument it is, especially the history-ignorant dumbasses who keep insisting that Europe is and and always was 100% Whitey McWhiterson.

I'm bringing something to the argument? At least I know I'm being deliberately absurd. You on the other hand haven't quite grasped that fact yet.

And labeling something or someone as privileged, or saying "check your privileged is a cheap and intellectually barren get out clause that you're just used, that your ilk use when you want to undermine something by implying it comes from a less than credible source, without actually acknowledging the point that was made.

History ignorant, ha, and the travesties against historical accuracy continue. I read in this thread that first, Thedas wasn't a real world comparison so mixes can be disregarded, then it's became, well historically Europe showed greater ethnic diversity, so Thedas should represent that. Really, you chaps just jump about trying to accomodate your own bias.

If we're looking at ethnic diversity. Ferelden, the equivalent of medieval England was predominantly caucasian. Deal with it, as was France, the Holy Roman Empire, most of Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.

If you're looking at Kirkwall, Tevinter, the Free City States and Rivian then that's different and the mix is seperate due to the closer proximity of ethnic groups, present in the vicinity. Ie: Spain North African, Italy and Asia Minor.

yes because, just because you are born on one side of an imaginary line (nation boarder) means that you will turn another that nations "color".... *shakes head* if only gentics worked that way,

Leandra is an Amell from Kirkwall, a cosmopolitan, multicultural trading hub. I believe it's referred to as the Gateway to Tevinter. People from all over Thedas and beyond passed through there, possibly settling. Malcom we never actually meet.

Point being, the player can make Hawke whatever they want, and it's supported by the setting and lore. If they create a Hawke that has Rivaini ancestry, well then so be it. By extension, that ethnicity is shared by Leandra and the rest of their family.

As was already pointed out, there's the Southrons, for starters.  But you can use Google, right?  Do a little research yourself.  I am NOT going to take the time to discuss the matter here for pages and pages, especially not when I get the distinct impression you're already prepared not to listen.

Coloured people on the evil side and white people on the good side. Come on! Get with the times, if you don't have a rainbow coalition fighting you're a bigot. Or so I'm told, I'm a bigot apparantly, because I think that the point is absurdly stupid.

I only pointed out that it exists.  Racist concepts in Lord of the Rings is a thing.  Sorry.  I love the story as much as the next geek.  But loving it does not require that I be blind to the facts.

Sometimes I wonder if the reason we don't see more black characters is because Bioware is scared crapless about racism allegations.

If that was the case, you wouldn't think they'd make a character like Jacob.

So you like to make bold statements and then when asked about them you tell me to look it up on google. Thats weaksauce and lazy. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.

That's because they aren't black people in Thedas it's not a very hard thing to grasp, the closest we've gotten is Sten and he's a genetic abnormality from a race of oxmen.

Gee.  Maybe because racism is inherently offensive?  Especially to those people against whom it is directed?  I am NOT about to start telling marginalized people what they should and should not find offensive.

That said, people ought to be able to acknowledge the reality of something without other people screaming about them taking offense.

Why exactly are you arguing this?  They may not have LOOKED the part as well as YOU THINK THEY SHOULD, but lore-wise, yes, they ARE black.
