So there is the link to the poll so everyone can get a Statistical idea, but moreover I want everyone to discuss the whosits and whatsits, the freudianisms, etc. behind your choices.
I am a male, playing a male (first runthrough). Not because of any inherent vehemence felt toward my mother (and therefore all women) because she forgot to tuck me in once, but mainly because I grew super attached to my male Shepard before i could really get a hold of my female one.
I will be really surprised to see the numbers of opposite sex first runthroughs. It seems like an interesting topic!
What Gender Will You Play vs. What Gender You Are. Why?

Male. Playing Femshep. Why? Because i am unable to see Shappard as anything else then a female... But then 80% of my DA:O characters are female too... One day maybe i'll let the "professionals " figure out why.

Well, I play both, sooo...I guess my main shep is female like me. But, I have no trouble playing male.

Male Shepard.
I always play male characters, regardless of it's a single player or MMORPG. Although I do find the "ud rather look a guys ass all day?" argument a little stupid.

Male playing as Female here. I like Jennifer Hale's voice acting better, and am tired of my game heroes being tough, no nonsense dudes.
A tough, no nonsense chick is just the antidote.

I only ever play as my own gender which is male....with rare exceptions when I hunt achievements but since none of the achievements in ME2 require a female PC I never will play as anything but male.

Female playing female. I enjoy playing as femShep because it feels more natural to me. She's incredibly normal when compared to other leading ladies in video games, and yet she has so much more strength. I love it.
I'm going to be picking up a male Shepard or two in ME2, though.

I applaud you.
Honestly I do. I have only recently discovered how interesting it is to play as the opposite sex, and that was well after my idea of Shepard being a male was cemented in my brain. I'm definitely going to give a femshep a runthrough though!
Damn professionals!

Female, playing a female character, it's just easier for me to get into RPGs. I do play male characters sometimes, but it's usually on subsequent playthroughs.

Everyone here knows you can do multiple playthroughs, right?
You can play as both genders and that's what I intend to do. I'm a guy so I'll play as Jack Shepard first, but Elizabeth Shepard will be right behind him.

I"m 50/50. I always go male first, because i'm a dude and it's easier to identify with another dude's actions. But once i've beaten the game and know the general outcome and choices to be made, it's easier to put myself into a woman's pants to get the job done. (yea..i just said that.)

Male playing male, don't want to start again the sexism argument and such but I certainly think a male character fits better the action hero badass than a female one, and before anyone throws him/herself at my throat I don't mean a femShep wouldn't make sense or anything, it's just personal preference.
I still have my badass renegade femShep for my secondary playthrough though

Male playing Male. Shepherd is a man in my eyes. I've come to accept no substitute for my envisioned Shepherd.

Female playing female. Females kick ass and look good doing it
My second playthrough will be my maleshep but to me, my Femshep is my canon

I have 2 personal canon shepards. One male and one female with their own distinct stories.
Male obviously.

Male playing female. I think that female protagonists are really interesting, but it seems like in a lot of games you either get a male protagonist or a female protagonist who only exists as sex appeal. THus when I get a chance to have a good, strong female character, I go for it.

Female playing as a female because that was the whole reason I even got the first game.
Its also how I discovered BioWare and why I own nearly all their games.
BioWare and their ability to let players choose what gender the main charatcer is. They have spoiled me and now I don't want to return to jRPGs and their 16 year old spikey blue haired boy heroes ;_;
And back to the topic at hand, I will play as a male Shepard eventually, if only to see the romance paths for the lady party members. :3

For my main Shep, male playing female because
A) I prefer Jennifer Hale's voice acting
My MaleShep's look like crap
and
C) It's less of a cliche without the standard big tough, bald tough guy who saves the day.
