Male, playing female. I just enjoy female protagonists more. There's something about a strong woman...

For me it a simple matter of what i want to look at. As a male i find the female form in all of its wonderful shapes and sizes to be a marvel of creation. As such my preferences lean towards what i want to look at and considering the amount of time i will spend looking at the character i would prefer to look at something that is pleasing to my eye. It really is nothing more than a choice of eye candy.

I am going to play as a male. Male in real life. I just wish Meer's acting was as good as Hale's.

Male playing female. It's all about the voice acting for me. Meer sounds too wooden at times, while Hale sounds amazing every time.

I'm a male and usually play a male in video games when given the choice. To me it is just something more I can relate too. If we're talking about Shepard I think that the default Shepard fit the role quite well so I stuck with it. I do play females occasionally but mostly stay with the male PC.

Both, one after the other. I've always said that you haven't seen a Bioware game in its entirety until you've played as a male and as a female character.
But I'll start with a male since that's my real gender and I relate better to male characters than to female characters.

Male playing Male. I tend to play both genders, but I always play my own gender first. Can't really say for afterwards, though; with a lot of games, I favour playing females because I dislike the appearance of the male character models. Don't think I'll have that problem with Mass Effect, though.

Female playing female. It feels like I'm more part of the experience, I guess it comes down to the fact that I want a character more like me. Be addressed like a woman, wanna think of the woman as the bad***. Not to mention, the for-female romance options usually appeal to me more.

I agree plus theres not many female leads in games atm. But I'll play as a guy first which I am then I'll play as my Female Shepherd.

Like others, male playing female, simply because I enjoy Hale's voice acting more.
That being said, for my very first runthrough I'll use my male shep, because he's my renegade, and I want to see what all the other races are doing now that I let the council blow up.

My female renegade vanguard. I would have liked to play my Male sentinel first, but that playthrough won't be ready in time for ME2. D:

I'm a female, and I only play with male characters. Tried a female, got halfway through and was annoyed by her. In ME1 the first female soldier you run into (if not yourself) is wearing pink armour! Pink does not belong on the battlefield... or the hockey rink for that matter. (Sorry, my pet peeve snuck in there.)

I have 3 Male ME characters and 2 Female characters, all with different choices (both Paragon and Renegade) I think Jennifer Hale's voice acting makes for a slightly tougher Shepard and the female playthroughs I've done are awesome. Can't wait to explore the romance options and story for both genders of Shepard!

If I am going to be staring at someone's back for numerous hours of gameplay I rather have something good looking to at least check out once in a while (meaning when no one is shooting at me or driving).
In the first game every character except for one was female played as a male so I could romance Ashley.

Male playing male with my main canon character, because I'm a guy, but also because because a flat, deadpan, laconic tone in every line exactly the sort of thing he'd have
I just can't decide on the issue of facial hair...

Female playing male. My husband is male playing female.
My reason? I personally will play either gender. Depends on my mood. I picked a guy as my main Shepard because of the way elite military units are in real life - they either don't allow women or are vast majority men. Feels appropriate for it to be a guy.
My husband's reason? Because he ALWAYS plays female in video games when given the option. He'd rather look at a female character than a male character.

Female playing Female always. I just can't seem to bring myself to play as maleshep; this option was one of the reasons I started playing since the game just feels more real to me when I play as my gender (this of course coming from someone who does not play many games, but still, the option to play as a girl is just awesome not mention I love Jennifer Hale's voice!)

Female playing female because a) it's more original that way and I cannot see Shepard as anything other than female (although I do have a male Shepard just to experience the game in different ways),
I can relate better to female characters because I am one, and c) the voice acting is great.

Male Playing Female (first playthrough).
I like Jennifer Hale's more in the first one, so I am more emotionally invested into my FemShep. I use my morals, but I am not the character.
